Currier makes 37 saves, Women’s Soccer loses to Worcester State

Worcester, MA—Worcester State's Hailey Mignon scored twice leading the Lancers to a 3-0 win over MCLA today in both teams MASCAC season opener. With the win Worcester State improves to 4-1-1 overall and 1-0 in the MASCAC. MCLA falls to 0-4-1 overall and 0-1 in league play.

With both teams seeking their first win of the season it was Worcester State that came out on the offensive, forcing MCLA senior keeper Jillian Currier (Troy, NY) to make 9 saves in the first 10 minutes of play. The best chance in this flurry would come in the 7th minute when Lancer midfielder Hailey Skowronski (Douglas, MA) broke in all alone on Currier. The aggressive keeper responded by charging out at Skowronski to cut down the angle and to make a terrific save to keep the match scoreless.

But the Lancers would not relent. Currier would make 9 more saves before Worcester State senior Hailey Mignon (Tewksbury, MA) finally broke the tie in the 34th minute. Getting a piece of a bouncing punt by the Worcester State keeper, Mignon would not be denied pushing the ball forward, breaking through the Trailblazer defense until it was only Currier remaining. Mignon would slide it past the keeper for the senior's 3rd goal of the season and give the Lancers the 1-0 lead.

MCLA almost answered in the 40th minute when senior Sophie Elser (Pittsfield, MA) would take the ball from a Lancer defender and find teammate junior Anna Lewis (North Monmouth, ME) near the top of the box. But the Lewis attempt would graze off the crossbar and Worcester State would take the 1-0 lead into halftime.

Worcester State's pressure remained consistent coming out of the break. In the 57th minute Mignon would add her second goal of the day off a cross from junior Abigale Berriault (Wareham, MA) to make it 2-0.  In the 70th minute the lead would increase again as Hailey Skowronski would run down a ball on the left side and play it across the goal mouth for first year Maya Sullivan (Belchertown, MA) to punch it home to make it 3-0 and score her first career goal.

The Lancers held a decisive advantage in shots (52-3) and corners (9-0).

With the win, Worcester State first year keeper Mallory Dupuis (Leominster, MA) improves to 1-4-1. MCLA keeper Jillian Currier made 37 saves in the loss and drops to 0-4-1.

Both teams play host to nonconference foes next Tuesday evening as Worcester State will host Keene State at 7pm and MCLA plays host to Eastern Nazarene at 6pm.
