AMHERST, Mass. – The MCLA Men's Basketball team hit the road this evening for a non-conference matchup with the Amherst College Mammoths at the LeFrak Gymnasium. A frigidly cold night outside of the gym followed the Trailblazers inside, where they finished the night with a 15-62 shooting effort, including a 6-31 result from beyond the three-point arc as the hosts doubled MCLA up, winning 81-40.

THE BASICS:

  • Date: Tuesday, December 3, 2024
  • Score: MCLA 40, Amherst 81
  • Records: MCLA Trailblazers 0-9 (MASCAC 0-0) | Amherst College Mammoths 5-2 (NESCAC 0-0)

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • MCLA held an early lead thanks to a layup from sophomore guard Hayden Morris-Gray (Port Jefferson Station, NY) and graduate student forward Jackson Brown (Latham, NY), hitting the second of two free throws to build a 3-0 lead. The lead held until Amherst's Chris Hammond also sank the second of a pair of free throws, and Noah Helmke fired up a three to put the Mammoths ahead 4-3. From that point forward, the hosts were less than hospitable to the visitors, resulting in the final score of 81-40.
  • Brown led the Trailblazers with 15 points on the strength of a 4-8 showing beyond the arc, being the only Trailblazer to cross the double-digit barrier. Senior guard JoJo Garcia (Henderson, NV) was second with seven points.
  • Amherst was paced by four players in double-digits, led by 19 points from Will Scherer. Helmke and Hammond each added 12 points, and Elias Chin added 10 points off the bench. Scherer and Helmke finished with double-doubles, pulling down 11 and 10 rebounds, respectively.
