BucBall Splits Double Header to Close out Florida Trip

FORT PIERCE, Florida – After winning their season opener on Saturday afternoon, 10-1, over Wilkes, the Buccaneers were back on the field in Florida to take on Muskingum in a double header. The Fighting Muskies bested the Bucs in game one, 5-4, and the Bucs took game two 5-3.

At The Plate

Buccaneer freshman Zach Sylvia (Brockton, Mass) led the Buccaneers with three hits, including a triple, while scoring twice and driving in a run.

Senior Nick Haley (Hanson, Mass) drove in two runs for Maritime.

Sylvia and senior Jackson Simone (Seattle, Wash) each stole a base in the loss.

Muskingum's Sam Pinckert tallied three hits and three runs in the win.

Matt Stewart drove in two runs for the Muskies in a 1-for-3 day with a double.

Shortstop Devin Ryan's lone hit was a double, he drove in a run and scored twice.

Pinckert and Ryan also each stole a base.

 

How It Happened

The team's played to a scoreless tie through the first two and a half innings of the game. In the bottom of the third the Muskies broke through scoring a run on a Chayce Lundell single, scoring Pinckert.

Down one, the Buccaneers answered in the top of the fourth on a Haley sacrifice fly, scoring Sylvia from third.

The score remained 1-1 through the top of the fifth. In the bottom of the fifth innings Muskingum broke the tie and took a two-run, 3-1, lead on a Stewart double.

In the top of the sixth the Bucs tied the game back up at 3-3. Haley singled scoring Ben Paine (Dartmouth, Mass), followed by an AJ Luciano (Lynn, Mass) groundout which brought Sylvia in from third.

Maritime took their first lead of the game in the top of the seventh on a Sylvia single to center field. The lead was short lived as the Muskies scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh to walk off with the game one win, 5-4.

Sylvia racked up three hits for the Bucs in the win and drove in a run.

Junior Ben Paine (Dartmouth, Mass) had a multi-hit game in the win going 2-for-4 with a run scored.

Senior Jackson Simone (Seattle, Wash) walked three times in the game and drove in a run.

Sophomore Joe Sanchez (Dracut, Mass) went 1-for-2 in the game with an RBI.

Catcher Michael Doyle (Boston, Mass) scored twice for the Bucs in the game.

Devin Ryan led the Muskies with three hits and drove in a run.

 

How It Happened

The Buccaneers opened the scoring in game two taking a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning. The runs were scored via a Sanchez single scoring Dylan Sullo (Acushnet, Mass), a Sylvia single scoring Doyle and a Simone walk with the bases loaded bringing in Alex Schlapak (Dover, N.H.).

Muskingum cut the lead to one, 3-2, in the top of the third on a sacrifice fly to left and a Ryan double to right. The Bucs opened the lead back to two runs in the bottom of the third on a wild pitch that scored Doyle from third.

With the score 4-2 Bucs, the middle innings stayed quiet as neither team brought a run across until the sixth inning. In the top of the sixth the Muskies cut the lead tow one scoring a run on a Buccaneer error. Maritime answered in the bottom of the frame on a passed ball scoring Paine.

Up 5-3 the Buccaneer pitching staff shut down the Muskie bats in the top of the seventh thanks to two strikeouts to end the game from Auld.

The Buccaneers head north and will take the field again in Dudley, Mass against Nichols College on Wednesday, March 11th.
