Bucs Beaten by Beacons in Midweek Clash

BUZZARDS BAY, Mass -- The Buccaneers women's lacrosse team took on UMass Boston at home on Wednesday night and went down to the Beacons by a final of 15-4.

Inside The Numbers

Maritime

  • Freshman Tessa Hinds led the Bucs with two goals in the game. Senior captain Allie Dickinson and freshman Karah Deveau each had one score.
  • Dickinson was credited with two assists in the loss.
  • Rech picked up a game-high five ground balls for the Bucs.
  • Brady Deschamps led the Bucs with five draw controls.
  • Defensively, Rech led the team with two caused turnovers.
  • In total, Maritime picked up nine ground balls, were successful on 11-of-18 clears, won 10 draw controls, and took 12 shots in the game.

UMass Boston

  • Hannah Rich led all players with five goals. Ava Duffy scored three times and Emily Pearl had two goals. Angelina Mazzone, Jamie McAleavey, Teresa Sheedy, Rae Alexander, and Kheiara Vilus all had one score.
  • Rich led the Beacons with two assists. Four other players had one each.
  • Sheedy led the team with three ground balls. 
  • Mazzone had a game-high seven draw controls.
  • Defensively, four players caused two turnovers each in the win.
  • In total, UMass Boston picked up 13 ground balls, were successful on 12-of-14 clears, won 13 draw controls, and took 32 shots in the game.

 

How It Happened

The Beacons scored the first three goals in the game and kept the Bucs at zero for much of the first quarter. Rich scored first at 13:41 and it took over 10 minutes before McAleavey scored their second foal at 3:15. Rich scored the Beacons third goal on a free position shot at 2:30 to give the guests a 3-0 advantage. Hinds got the Buccaneers on the board at the 1:52 mark of the quarter to make the score 3-1. Rich scored with just under a minute in the first to give the Beacons a 4-1 lead after the first quarter.

UMass Boston controlled the second quarter keeping the Bucs off the board and scored four goals of their own. Duffy and Pearl scored the first two on power plays to bring the score to 6-1. Mazzone scored at 4:51 at even strength and Alexander netted her goal on a power play with 49 seconds left in the half. The Beacons took an 8-1 lead into the halftime break.

UMB kept the same theme in the third quarter getting four more goals without allowing the Bucs to score on the other end of the field. Duffy scored two, Rich scored another, and Pearl scored a power-play goal with six minute left in the third. The Beacons held a 12-1 advantage at the end of three. 

In the fourth Rich opener the scoring to make the score 13-1. Then, Deveau for the Bucs on the board for the first time since the first quarter on a free position shot to get the score to 13-2. The Beacons scored twice more on goals from Sheedy and Vilus and the Bucs closed out the game with goals from Dickinson and Hinds. Umass Boston finished off the clock and took home a 15-4 win over Maritime.

The Buccaneers are back home on Saturday to take on Maine Maritime in the Admiral's cup at 2pm.
