FITCHBURG, Mass. – The MCLA baseball team returned to the MASCAC portion of their schedule this afternoon, traveling to Fitchburg State for a matchup with the Falcons at Riccards Field. Jayco Pena had two hits, drove in two runs, and scored a run for the Trailblazers. The Falcons' Jacob Hurrell had a homerun and a double to drive in three runs in Fitchburg's 15-3 victory.

THE BASICS:

  • Date: Friday, April 19, 2024
  • Score: MCLA 3, Fitchburg State 15
  • Records: MCLA Trailblazers 5-19 (MASCAC 2-7) | Fitchburg State Falcons 8-20 (MASCA 3-8)

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Fitchburg State opened the scoring two batters into the game when Jacob Hurrell took an outside pitch to the opposite field for his MASCAC-leading seventh home run of the season, putting the Falcons in front 1-0.
  • The score held until the top of the fourth inning when MCLA's Chris Vargas singled through the right side of the infield to score Jayco Pena.
  • After Fitchburg took the lead back with a run in the bottom of the fourth, the Trailblazers jumped back in front in the top of the fifth inning. Josh Bissaillon led off the inning with a walk and moved to second when Henry Blake singled up the middle. Three batters later, Ty Mazzeo loaded the bases with another free pass. Jayco Pena then drove a ball into left-centerfield. Bissaillon scored easily, and Blake's slide at the plate knocked the ball loose from the catcher, giving the Trailblazers a 3-2 lead.
  • A two-run bottom of the fifth returned the lead to the Falcons, and a pair of crooked numbers in the sixth and seventh innings gave the Falcons a 15-3 lead that would hold until the end of the game.
  • Fitchburg starting pitcher Joseph Hartnett pitched five innings, scattering five hits and striking out six, to improve his record to 2-3. MCLA's Rob Correia took the loss to drop his record to 1-2.
