Women’s Soccer Late Comeback Attempt Foiled in 3-2 Loss to Privateers

CASTINE, Maine – The Buccaneer women's soccer team played in their second and final game of the 2019 Maritime Cup on Saturday afternoon at Maine Maritime against SUNY Maritime. Though the Bucs were able to erase a two-goal Privateer lead, the Bucs fell to 0-2 on the season, losing to SUNY 3-2 on a late goal.

Junior Anna Deely (Marstons Mills, Mass) scored the first goal of the season for the Bucs in Saturday's game. Freshman Julia Podchaiski (Wallingford, Conn) also netted a goal for the Bucs, the first if her career. Goalkeeper Paige Albertson (Nantucket, Mass) made four saves on seven shots faced, allowing three Privateer goals.

SUNY had three different goal scorers in the game. Gayle Woods, MacKenzie Fabiani, and Brianna Etienne each scored for SUNY in the win. Anya Joseberger was the only player in the game credited with an assist. Goalkeeper Lizzie Pomaro made three saves and allowed two goals on five shots faced.

For the second game in a row, the Buccaneer defense held strong for the first 25 minutes of the game. In the 25th minute Etienne scored the first goal of the game for the Privateers. SUNY carried that 1-0 lead to the halftime break.

In the second half, the Privateers doubled their lead on Woods' goal, unassisted in the 66th minute. Down 2-0, the Buccaneers struck in the 70th minute on Deely's first of the season to cut the lead in half. Three minutes later, Podchaiski found the back of the net to tie the game at 2-2. The Buccaneers holding the momentum, they were unable to take the lead. In the 87th minute SUNY retook the lead for good on Fabiani's goal. The Bucs lost 3-2 to drop to 0-2 on the young season.

Next up for the Buccaneers is their home opener on Monday, September 9th at 7pm against Suffolk University.
