Sage takes two from Softball in nonconference action

NORTH ADAMS, Mass.—Sage pulled away late in the opener taking the first game 10-5 and ran away early in the nightcap winning 12-1 in 5 innings to sweep the MCLA Softball team in a nonconference doubleheader this afternoon. With the wins Sage improves to 11-11 while MCLA falls to 6-18.

Game One         Sage 10               MCLA 5

Madison Teta (3-for-4, RBI) would singlehandedly give the Trailblazers a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the 1st when the senior centerfielder doubled to right field, stole third and took home on a Sage error.

The Gators would produce six hits including RBIs from Arianna Papas, Taylor Dicranian and Amber Banas and push four runs across the plate to go up 4-1 in the top of the 3rd. MCLA would have a strong response in the home-half however as Teta, Kristie Zator (2-for-3, RBI) and Madyson Torres (1-for-2, RBI) would each drive in a run to knot things up at 4-4.

Another Papas RBI single would give Sage a 5-4 lead in the 4th but again the Trailblazers would answer, this time in the 5th, as a Lidia Flores (2-for-3, RBI) single to centerfield would bring home Zator to tie the game again at 5-5.

After back-to-back singles in the top of the 7th, another Dicranian RBI would put the Gators up 6-5 and force a pitching change, but it was to no avail as the visitors would score four more runs and go on to take the opening game, 10-5.

Leah Madore (W, 6-4) would go the distance for Sage allowing 5 runs (four earned) on nine hits with just one walk and ten strikeouts. MCLA starter Sarah Williams (L, 3-6) would pitch 6 innings allowing 8 runs (seven earned) on eleven hits.

Game Two         Sage 12               MCLA 1

A Maggie Closinski (2-for-2, RBI) base hit in the bottom of the 2nd would drive in Zator (2-for-3) to cut the Sage lead to 2-1 but the Gators would score five times in both the 3rd and 4th innings and carry that lead through the 5th to end the game and complete the sweep.

Eight different Gators would finish with a hit including Dicranian (1-for-3, 3 RBI), Lauren Salmonese (1-for-4, 2 RBI) and Amelia Wasilko 1-for-3, 2 RBI).

Dicranian (W, 5-7) would also earn the win on the mound pitching 4 innings allowing one run on four hits. Gabriella Cozzolino (L, 0-5) took the loss for the Trailblazers allowing 7 runs (four earned) and four hits.

Both teams will return to conference play on Saturday as Sage hosts St. John Fisher and MCLA travels to Framingham State for a doubleheader scheduled to begin at 1pm.
