Softball drops a pair at Albertus Magnus

New Haven, Conn.—The MCLA Softball team was swept by Albertus Magnus College in a nonconference doubleheader this afternoon. The Trailblazers were nipped 2-1 in the opener and 13-5 in game two. With the wins the Falcons improve to 6-8 while MCLA falls to 2-10.

Game One         Albertus Magnus 2         MCLA 1

An Ava Gladwin single in the bottom of the 2nd that drove in Peyton Davis would break a scoreless tie to give Albertus an early 1-0 lead. It looked like the Falcons might add a second run in the 3rd, but MCLA center fielder Madison Teta (1-for-3) cut down Janelle Franklin at the plate to keep it 1-0.

After Hailey Peabody's (2-for-3, 3 SB) second hit and third stolen base of the game placed her on second in the top of the 4th, Madyson Torres (1-for-3, RBI) would double to center driving in Peabody to tie the game 1-1.

Breanna Saldivar would score on a groundout in the bottom of the 5th allowing Albertus to reestablish their one-run lead.

MCLA's Abby Bird would draw a walk in the top of the 7th to represent the tying run but the Trailblazers would be unable to advance her and ultimately fall in game one, 2-1.

Falcon starting pitcher Erin Dighelo (W, 3-1) would go the distance allowing one earned run on five hits striking out five batters. MCLA starter Lidia Flores (L, 1-3) allowed two earned runs on five hits in six innings pitched.

Game Two         Albertus Magnus 13       MCLA 5

MCLA took the early 1-0 lead in game two when a Teta (1-for-3, 2 RBIs) sacrifice fly scored Peabody (1-for-3, 2 R, RBI) who had singled, stole second and reached third on a wild pitch.  Albertus would respond in the bottom half by loading the bases with no outs and ultimately score four runs to make it 4-1.

A Peabody RBI single in the top of the 3rd would bring home Ezmeralda Albright (2-for-3) who had tripled, to make it 4-2, but the Falcons would again respond in the bottom half with a pair of runs expanding their lead to 6-2.

The Falcons would load the bases in the bottom of the 5th, but MCLA pitcher Sarah Williams would register her first strikeout of the game to get out of the jam.

A Kristie Zator (1-for-2, RBI) RBI single in the top of the 5th would score Peabody and a Teta triple in the next at bat would make it 6-4. The Trailblazers would proceed to load the bases and Ella Staffier's (2-for-3, RBI) single to left would drive in Teta making it 6-5 after four-and-a-half.

Albertus would answer again however taking advantage of three walks and a pair of wild pitches, scoring 5 runs in the bottom of the 5th to jump out to an 11-5 advantage. A Peyton Davis bases loaded two-run single in the bottom of the 6th would make it 13-5 putting the game away.

Falcon starting pitcher Skylar Arent (W, 1-1) earned her first victory of the season going the distance allowing 5 earned runs on ten hits. MCLA Sarah Williams (L, 1-3) went 5 innings in the loss.

Albertus Magnus will next host Curry College Sunday at noon while MCLA travels to Holyoke High School to take on Elms College at 7pm.
