Softball drops pair against Worcester State

NORTH ADAMS, Mass.—The MCLA Softball team was swept this afternoon in a MASCAC doubleheader falling in the opener 7-3 and dropping the nightcap 9-1. With the results Worcester State improves to 16-8 (4-0 MASCAC) while MCLA falls to 6-14 (0-4 MASCAC).

Game One          Worcester State 7           MCLA 3

After a scoreless first three innings Worcester State would post three runs in the top of the 4th. The Lancers would register five hits including an RBI triple by Bella Gasbarro, an RBI single by Emily Bartlett and an RBI double by Jacqui Schwalm.

MCLA would answer with two in the home-half thanks to a solo shot by Ella Staffier and a two-out double by Kristie Zator that drove in Natalie Rich to make it 3-2.

Worcester would collect three more hits and take advantage of an error in the top of the 5th to post four more runs pushing the lead to 7-2. The Trailblazers would only be able to muster one more run in the bottom half resulting in the 7-3 win for the visitors.

Emily Bartlett (W, 5-3) would pitch 5.1 innings allowing 2 earned runs on four hits while striking out four batters. Lidia Flores (L, 2-6) took the loss allowing 4 earned runs on eight hits.

Game Two          Worcester State 9           MCLA 1

A Kristie Zator solo homerun in the bottom of the 2nd would give MCLA an early lead but Worcester State would tie thigs up 1-1 in the top of the 3rd and put up four more in the top of the 5th thanks to RBI hits by Emma Lanpher, Rachel Sinclair and Abigail Koziol to make it 5-1.

The Lancers would add three more in the top of the 6th and a solo shot by Bella Gasbarro in the top of the 7th for the 9-1 final.

Worcester State starting pitcher Jen Thorburn (W, 5-3) threw a two-hit, one run, complete game for the Lancers. MCLA starter Sarah Williams (L, 2-4) took the loss pitching 4.2 innings allowing 5 runs on five hits.

Both teams will play nonconference opponents next as Worcester State travels to Rhode Island College on Thursday and MCLA hosts Union College (NY) in a doubleheader on Tuesday starting at 3pm.
