Buc Ball Grounds Owls in Series Opener

BUZZARDS BAY, Mass -- The Buccaneers hosted Westfield State in the first of three conference games with the Owls this weekend on Friday at Hendy Field. With a dominant performance on the mound by Sam Huffman and Justin Brown the Bucs took game one of the series, 6-2.

Maritime

  • Eight different Buccaneers recorded a hit in the win, Zahc SylviaFrank AtenBrett VelzisAJ PietrafesaJohn TropeaAidan HendersonAidan Weir, and Jake Houston
  • Houston's hit was a double, the only extra base hit of the game for Maritime.
  • Sylvia, Pietrafesa, Henderson, and Michael Estrada all drove in a run.
  • Tropea scored twice; Sylvia, Velzis, Weir, and Houston all scored once.
  • Aten and Weir were each credited with a stolen base.

Westfield

  • Nick Marshall and Nolan Florence each recorded two hits in the loss including a double from Marshall, the only extra base hit for the Owls.
  • Alex Martin, Robison Guerrero Baez, and Devin Slattery all had one hit.
  • Marshall, and Florence were each credited with an RBI.
  • Martin and Marshall scored the two runs in the loss.
  • Baez was credited with a stolen base.

 

How It Happened

In the top of the first inning, the Owls scored on Marshall's double to right field, scoring Martin to give Westfield an early 1-0 advantage. It didn't last long as the Bucs answered in the bottom of the frame with three runs of their own. Pietrafesa singled up the middle to score Sylvia, Henderson walked with the bases loaded bringing in Velzis and Tropea scored one a wild pitch. The Bucs led 3-1 after one.

In the bottom of the second, Houston came in to score on a wild pitch giving the Bucs a 4-1 lead. 

Maritime extended their lead once again in the third with Tropea scoring on an Estrada ground out. Maritime lef 5-1 after three innings of play. 

Huffman kept the Owls at bay through the fifth and was relieved by Brown in the sixth. Brown got through his first inning of work with no damage done and the Bucs offense rewarded him with another run on an RBI single by Sylvia that scored weir. The Buccaneers held a 6-1 lead after six.

The Owls threatened in the ninth after scoreless innings in the seventh and eighth as they loaded the bases and scored a run. Brown worked his way out of the inning to secure a 6-2 victory for Maritime, a win on the mound for Huffman and a four-inning save for himself.

 

What's Next

The Bucs are on the road on Saturday in Westfield to take on the same Owls in a MASCAC doubleheader to close out their three-game series. First pitch of game one is scheduled for 12pm.
