Volleyball: Maritime Falls to Falcons on Senior Night

BUZZARDS BAY, Mass -- On Wednesday evening, the Buccaneer volleyball team played their final home match of the 2022 season and celebrated their three seniors, Isabelle MiazgaKolby Barbieri, and Alexa Smith prior to the game as part of Senior Night. In the match, the Bucs lost to the Falcons in straight sets.

Inside the Numbers

For The Bucs

  • Shayla Norodowg led the Bucs with four kills in the match. Marlo Stark added three.
  • Keira Whalen led the way in helpers with seven. 
  • Narodowg had the only ace of the match.
  • Isabelle Miazga led the team defensively with 19 digs. Whalen added 13. 
  • Whalen and Chloe Johnson each had a solo block in the loss.
  • The Bucs hitting percentage was at -.048 for the match. Stark led the way at .111.

For The Falcons

  • Macy Barnes led all players with 10 kills. Ashly Velazquez tallied eight.
  • Paola Velazquez racked up 29 assists in the Falcons win.
  • Ashly Velazquez had four aces in the match.
  • Defensively, libero Edsyl Irizzary led all players with 23 digs. Barnes had 20 of her own. 
  • Three players for Fisher recorded solo blocks in the win.
  • The Falcons hit at a .173 clip with Nathalie Rodriguez Cruz leading the way at .500.

How It Happened

In the first set, though the Falcons took an early lead, the Buccaneers kept themselves in it and though they never led, they stayed within a point or tied with the Falcons until the score reached 13-13. Fisher went on a 7-0 run from there to take a 20-13 advantage. Maritime scored four unanswered to get back within three. Fisher scored four of their own to go up 24-17. The Bucs got two of those points back and then got a kill from Aya Al-Juraishi to win the set 25-19.

In set two, Fisher took an immediate 9-0 lead. The Bucs rescued three points but could not get all the way back and lost the set 25-8 after the Falcons went on a 15-6 streak.

The Bucs took an early lead in set three and couldn't hold it. In the middle of the set, they trailed 13-6 and the Falcons again went on a big run, this time 12-2, to take the set 25-8, and the match, 3-0.

The Buccaneers close out their 2022 season on Saturday on the road at Westfield State in conference play at 12pm.
