MCLA silences Mount Holyoke

SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. (Sept. 29, 2009) -

Powered by junior forward Jess Tietgens (Stamford, Vt./Drury), the Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts women's soccer team picked up a 2-0 triumph over non-conference foe Mount Holyoke College this afternoon at the Mount Holyoke Soccer Field. Tietgens scored both goals for the Trailblazers, who found the win column for the sixth time in their last seven outings.

The contest went scoreless until the 38:38 mark, when Tietgens tallied her first goal of the day off an assist from sophomore forward Lauren Ford (Voorheesville, N.Y./Berne-Knox-Westerlo). Ford got things going with a free kick from the right side that found a streaking Tietgens in the center of the box. After tracking the pass down off a bounce, Tietgens placed a header past Lyons first year goalkeeper Ingibjörg Magnúsdóttir (Reykjavík, Iceland/Menntaskolinn vid Hamrahlid). It proved to be her third match winner of the 2009 campaign.

Tietgens then sealed things with her team leading 11th goal of the season off of a mishandled ball from Magnusdottir.

Mount Holyoke fell despite a 20-12 edge in the shot column. Sophomore goalkeeper Jen Wehner (Cooperstown, N.Y./Cooperstown) made eight saves en route to the shutout. It was her third shutout of the season.

Both teams will resume their league slates on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. Mount Holyoke (1-7-0, 0-1-0 NEWMAC) will visit New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) opponent Wellesley College, while MCLA (6-3-0, 1-1-0 MASCAC) will travel to Massachusetts State College Athletic Conference (MASCAC) foe Salem State College.
