Baseball drops pair of games to Cobleskill as they open 2020 season

Yaphank, NY- The MCLA Baseball team opened up their 2020 season under chilly conditions on Long Island this afternoon.  The Trailblazer nine dropped the opening game 9-7 to SUNY Cobleskill before dropping the nightcap 11-0 to the Fighting Tigers.  Cobleskill is 2-0 while MCLA starts off at 0-2.

Game One-

Cobleskill jumped out to an early 1-0 lead on a solo home run from Nick Thomas in the top of the first inning off MCLA starter Christian Womble.  After MCLA went in order in the bottom of the first, the Fighting Tigers erupted for six runs in the top of the second inning.  They had five hits in the frame, the biggest of which was a double off the bat of Eddy Garcia, to build a sizable lead.

MCLA answered in the bottom half of the frame with three runs of their own.  Logan Rumbolt, Jake Ferrara, and Dillon Maxon began the inning with base hits.  A walk to Shawn James brought in the first run while Austin Rachiele would hit a sacrifice fly to add another.  Ben Durland drove in the final run of the frame as Cobleskill escaped further damage by inducing a groundout.

Cobleskill added a single run in the third to increase the lead to 8-3, but MCLA matched it with runs of their own in the third and fourth innings to make it 8-5.  The Fighting Tigers scratched an insurance tally in the fifth to push ahead 9-5.

MCLA added two runs in the sixth inning and threatened for more in the home seventh, but a double play ball ended it and gave Cobleskill the season opening win.

Game Two-

In game two, Cobleskill's Devin Lewis tossed a complete game shutout to complete the sweep.  Cobleskill scored two runs in the first inning off of MCLA starter Ryan Ruef to take an early lead.  They would blow the game open with two more in the third and fourth frames to lead 6-0.

Any thoughts of an MCLA comeback were dashed by Lewis.  He held MCLA to just two hits on the afternoon and his teammates put the game completely out of reach with a five run outburst in the sixth off the MCLA bullpen.

The two teams will be back at it again tomrorow with another twinbill.  First pitch is slated for Noon.
