Teta Reaches Milestone in Softball Loss to VTSU-Castleton

CASTLETON, Vt. – The MCLA Softball team traveled up Route 7 this afternoon for a non-conference matchup with Vermont State University-Castelton. Maddy Teta knocked her 100th career hit, but the Trailblazers came up short in both games of the doubleheader.

THE BASICS:

  • Date: Tuesday, April 9, 2024
  • Game #1: MCLA 0, VTSU-Castleton 8
  • Game #2: MCLA 3, VTSU-Castleton 4
  • Records: MCLA Trailblazers 6-15 (MASCAC 0-4) | VTSU-Castleton Spartans 8-6 (LEC 0-0)

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Game #1
    • MCLA was held off the scoreboard in the first game as VTSU-Castleton's Madison Gould limited the Trailblazers to three hits while striking out seven in five innings.
    • Two of the three hits by MCLA went to Maddy Teta, but her two-out double in the second inning carried the most significance. This hit was number 100 of Teta's career, making her the 12th documented Trailblazer to reach that threshold.
    • The Spartans scored four runs in the bottom of the second inning to take control of the game, needing only four hits to score the four runs. The hosts then continued to chip away until reaching the eight-run advantage to enforce the run-rule for the win.
    • Gould recorded her fourth win of the season, improving to 4-2. Sarah Williams took the loss for MCLA, dropping to 4-7.
  • Game #2
    • The afternoon's second game was the more competitive of the day. The Trailblazers held a 3-2 advantage going into the bottom of the sixth inning before falling 4-3.
    • Castleton scored the game's first runs, scoring a pair of unearned runs on two hits and an error in the bottom of the second inning.
    • MCLA responded with a two-out rally in the top of the third to level the game. Hailey Peabody started the rally with a single to center field and then stole second before coming home on Ella Staffier's single through the right side of the infield. Staffier advanced to second when the Spartans' throw home couldn't catch Peabody. Staffier then scored when Lora Woyton's ground ball to the shortstop was airmailed over the first baseman's head.
    • Following a 1-2-3 bottom of the third, the Trailblazers took their first lead of the afternoon in the top of the fourth inning. Teta pulled a one-out single through the right side of the infield and moved to second base on Kristie Zator's ground out to the second baseman. Madyson Torres then put MCLA in front with an RBI single to right field.
    • Alexis Rogers threw two innings of scoreless relief to pick up the win for Castleton, raising her record to 2-0. Woyton went the distance for the Trailblazers but still saw her record fall to 2-6.
