Panthers Fall to Bridgewater State in Extras

Port Charlotte, Fl. -- The University of Pittsburgh at Bradford baseball team took Bridgewater State into extra innings on Wednesday, only to allow a run to score in the extra frame, losing the game 4-3.

Game Notes:

  • Sophomore Reid Tarnowski saw his first action of the season, starting the game on the mound for the Panthers. He got off to a slow start, as the Bears were able to go ahead in the first inning. Tarnowski allowed the first two batters to reach on a single and a double. He then settled down, getting a pop-up to the catcher, a sacrifice fly to score the run and a strikeout to limit the damage. 
  • Pitt-Bradford was able to come right back in the second to tie the game. Josh Zelinski led off with a single down the right-field line and moved to second on a wild pitch. Kevin Rehak brought him in a batter later with a single down the left-field line. 
  • Tarnowski continued to roll through the early portion of the game, keeping the Bears off the board for 3 innings until the Panthers could jump ahead.
  • In the 5th, Robert Sawicki and Jake McNabb hit back to back singles to start a rally. after a fielder's choice, Zelinski chased a pitch in the dirt for strike three but was able to reach on a wild pitch and a throwing error from the catcher. McNabb was able to scamper home and put the Panthers ahead 2-1.
  • The lead did not last long, as Bridgewater State was able to answer in their half of the 5th. Tarnowski allowed a leadoff single and following a sacrifice bunt and a pop-up, scored the tying run on a single through the right side.
  • The Panthers went down in order in the 6th, and Tarnowski was replaced by Andrew Bacha in the bottom of the inning. In the 7th, the Bears were able to retake the lead with an infield single, sacrifice bunt, and another RBI single.
  • Sophomore Tyler Aires came up with the big hit for the Panthers in the 8th, driving a two-out pitch over the left-field wall for a game-tying home run. The long ball was Aires' first of the season and 2nd of his Pitt-Bradford career. 
  • Bacha was able to get back to back 123 innings in the 8th and 9th to push the game into extra innings but had no such luck in the 10th. Bridgewater State led off the inning with a double and put the winning run on third on a throwing error. Following an intentional walk, Bacha hit a batter to bring in the winning run. 

Leaders:

  • Starting Pitcher Reid Tarnowski picked up a no-decision in his first action of the year. He allowed 2 earned runs on 6 hits and a walk in 5 innings pitched. He struck out 4 batters.
  • Andrew Bacha (1-1) was saddled with the loss. He allowed 2 runs, 1 earned, over 4+ innings pitched. He also allowed 3 hits, 2 walks, and the hit batsmen. He struck out 5 batters.
  • Robert Sawicki, Joshua Zelinski, and Kevin Rehak all finished the game 2 for 5. Zelinski scored a run and Rehak drove one in. 
  • Tyler Aires had the lone extra-base hit for the Panthers, the 8th inning game-tying home run. 

The loss moves the Panthers to 4-5 on the season. They are scheduled to take on Heidelberg on Saturday, March 14th in Fort Myers, Fl.
