Volleyball sweeps Fitchburg and Framingham in a 2-0 day

FRAMINGHAM, Mass. -- The Mount Holyoke College volleyball team scored a pair of 3-0 victories in non-conference matches played at Framingham State University on Saturday. The Lyons rose to 8-10 on the season with a 3-0 (25-19, 25-18, 25-10) win over Fitchburg State, then went on to defeat host Framingham State 3-0 (25-11, 25-22, 25-16).

Fitchburg State dropped to 3-14 after its loss, and Framingham State dropped to 14-10 after its loss.

The Lyons will return to NEWMAC play Tuesday at 7pm at home against WPI.

Mount Holyoke attacked at a .178 percentage and tallied 16 service aces in defeating the Falcons, who were limited to a -.093 attack percentage in the match. The Lyons improved in their attack percentage, as well as their margin of victory, in each successive set.

Sophomore libero Lucie Berclaz (Hull, Mass.) posted match highs of 25 digs and five aces, while first-year setter Sadie Duffrin (Minneapolis, Minn.) tallied 20 assists with three aces, two kills and four digs.

First-year middle hitter Elle Rimando (Mililani, Hawaii) and senior Marion Abeja (Kumi, Uganda) tied for the team lead with six kills apiece, with Rimando hitting at a .364 percentage and Abeja adding nine digs and two blocks. Senior Mar Simon (Miami, Fla.) added five kills.

The host Rams entered the match with a 14-9 record, but the Lyons were undaunted, pouncing on Framingham with a massive first-set effort and riding it the rest of the way for a surprising sweep.

Mount Holyoke attacked at a .481 percentage in the first set and limited Framingham to a -.062 mark to take a convincing 1-0 lead. The Lyons tallied 14 kills in the second set and 16 more in the third to wrap up an undefeated day.

First-year Madeline Barton (Brookfield, Wis.) did not play against Fitchburg, but led the Lyons with 13 kills against Framingham, attacking at a .360 rate and adding 10 digs. Abeja and Simon added 10 and eight kills apiece, with Simon posting a team-high 18 digs.

Rimando again was a model of efficiency, tallying seven kills against one error on only 11 attempts (.545).

Duffrin tied a season-high in assists with 34, despite the sweep, and added 11 digs and three kills.
