Volleyball: Bucs Lose Both ends of Tri-Match

PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- On Saturday afternoon, the Buccaneers played their final tri-match of the season in Rhode Island against Rhode Island College and a warm-up, non-conference match against Westfield State before the teams meet in Westfield next weekend. Though the Buccaneers played well, they dropped both matches in straight sets to the Anchorwomen and Owls.

Match One

The Basics

Final: Anchorwomen 3, Buccaneers 0 (25-15, 25-19, 25-12)

Records: Rhode Island College 6-12

               Maritime 3-13

Inside The Numbers

For The Bucs

  • Shayla Narodowg led the team in kills with eight. Chloe Johnson recorded six of her own and Kolby BarbieriMarlo Stark and Sydney McCarthy each had four kills. 
  • Keira Whalen recorded 23 assists in the match.
  • Narodowg tallied six service aces for the Bucs. 
  • Whalen led the team defensively with 10 digs.
  • The Buccaneers tallied a .179 hitting percentage in the match, led by Johnson at .545.

For The Anchorwomen

  • Amelia Murphy led all players with 16 kills. Megan Philbrick added eight of her own. 
  • Natalie Reid led all players with 32 assists. 
  • Philbrick and Reid each had three aces.
  • Defensively, Aubrey St. Onge led all players with 11 digs. 
  • Philbrick had the only block of the match.
  • RIC had a hitting percentage of .359, led by Murphy at .536.

How It Happened

The Buccaneers posted some of their highest, single-set hitting percentages of the season in sets two and three at .276 and .235. Unfortunately, they couldn't hold off the Anchorwomen who hit .417 in the first set and .344 in set two. RIC went on to win the first set by 10 points, 25-10, the second set by just six points, 25-19, and 25-12 in the third set.

Final: Owls 3, Buccaneers 0 (25-22, 25-21, 25-16)

Records: Westfield 10-10

               Maritime 3-14

Inside the Numbers

For The Bucs

  • Shayla Narodowg and Marlo Stark led Maritime with four kills each. Keira Whalen and Kolby Barbieri each had three kills.
  • Whalen led the team with 15 assists. 
  • Audrey Manning, Whalen, Stark and Narodowg each had three aces in the loss. 
  • Defensively, Whalen led the team with 14 digs. Manning posted 12 and Stark racked up 10. 
  • Chloe Johnson and Barbieri combined for a block in the match.
  • The Bucs posted a -.011 hitting percentage in the match. Whalen led the way with .375 HP.

For The Owls

  • Emma Nahill led all players with 11 kills. Hannah Nahill had 10 of her own. 
  • Logan Sullivan had 28 assists to lead all players. 
  • Siobhan Meyer had four aces for the Owls.
  • Defensively, Lizi Buron had 15 digs, Hannah Nahill had 14 of her own. 
  • Meyer posted four blocks in the win.
  • The Owls had a hitting percentage of .211, led by Emma Nahill at .440.

How It Happened

In a warm up match before the two teams meet in conference play in Westfield next Saturday, the Owls got the best of the Bucs in straight sets but not without some fight from the Maritime squad. The Bucs lost by a combined seven points to the owls in the first two sets and were competitive in both with opportunities to win. The Owls got momentum in the third set to win by nine points. The Buccaneers will take the loss into their match next weekend looking for redemption.

The Buccaneers will celebrate the careers of Kolby BarbieriIsabelle Miazga and Alexa Smith in a Senior Day celebration on Wednesday prior to their match against Fisher College at 7pm at home.
