Baseball's Rally Falls Just Short at Mass. Maritime

BUZZARDS BAY, Mass. – Trailing 4-0 through five innings, the Wentworth Institute of Technology baseball team clawed its way back to pull within a run in the ninth inning, however, the Leopards comeback bid fell just short as the Black & Gold fell to Mass. Maritime, 4-3.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Mass. Maritime took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning with senior Zach Sylvia (Brockton, Mass.) led off with a double, went to third on a sacrifice bunt, and came in to score when junior Brett Velzis (Cypress, Texas) grounded out.
  • The Buccaneers added three in the third inning to go on top, 4-0. A leadoff single and a walk put runners at first and second with no outs. Sophomore Adam Weir (Wallingford, Conn.) hit a two-run double and, after being moved to third on a sacrifice bunt, scored on an RBI single from junior Jake Quillen (Doylestown, Pa.).
  • Held hitless through the first five innings, the sixth inning saw Wentworth pull within a pair. Junior A.T. DiPina (Pawtucket, R.I.) led off with a single and went to third on a junior Christian Peruzzi (Plymouth, Mass.) single. With one out, freshman Nick Cullinan (Sandy Hook, Conn.) drove both runners in with a single and went to second on an error. However, he was stranded in scoring position after a flyout and a strikeout.
  • With two outs in the ninth inning, Freshman Matt Favazzo (Lexington, Mass.) reached on an error. After sophomore Jake Prisco (Bridgewater, Mass.) was hit by a pitch, freshman Matt Robinson singled in Favazzo and put the tying run in scoring position. However, a strikeout ended the rally and the game.
  • Five different student-athletes recorded hits, including Cullinan who drove in two runs. On the mound, sophomore Brady Aubuchon (Westminster, Mass.) took the loss (1-2) as he allowed four runs on seven hits and struck out three in five innings of work. Senior Brandon Sullivan (Quincy, Mass.) picthed the final three innings, allowing no runs and no hits while striking out five.

ALL-TIME SERIES:

  • Today was the 35th all-time meeting between the two teams.
