Softball swept at Westfield State

WESTFIELD, Mass.—The MCLA softball team dropped a doubleheader this afternoon at Westfield State. The Trailblazers were walked off by the Owls 3-2 in the opener and fell 12-4 in six innings in game two. With the sweep Westfield improves to 18-7 (7-1 MASCAC) while MCLA falls to 6-22 (0-8 MASCAC).

Game One         Westfield State 3            MCLA 2

After Jordyn Lummus stole home in the bottom of the 1st inning, Sarah Hough's solo-shot to left field in the bottom of the 4th inning would give Westfield State a 2-0 lead.

MCLA would get one back in the top of the 5th when Madison Teta singled to drive in Maggie Closinski to make it 2-1. Closinski would score the tying run as well after she singled, and a pair of errors brought the first-year catcher home with two outs in the top of the 7th.

The Owls would get the first two runners on in the home half and after a sacrifice bunt, Meredith Higgins would smash a ball to the centerfield fence for the 3-2 walk-off win.

Stephanie Scoville (W, 9-2) earned the win on the mound for Westfield with a complete-game, two-run, four-hit performance. Lidia Flores (L, 2-9) also went the distance but took the loss for the Trailblazers allowing three runs on seven hits.

Game Two         Westfield State 12            MCLA 4          (6 innings)

MCLA would eclipse their game one run output in the top of the 1st as a pair of triples by Teta and Ella Staffier (2-for-4, 2 RBI) as well as a Flores sacrifice fly would give the visitors an early 3-0 lead.

Westfield would post a run in the bottom of the 2nd before connecting on six hits and taking advantage of two errors in the 3rd to erupt for seven more to sprint ahead, 8-3.

The teams would exchange runs in the 4th to make it 9-4, but a two-run homer by Chrisina Ciampa and an RBI basehit by Sabrina Testa in the bottom of the 6th would secure the 12-4 win and the sweep.

Westfield's Gianna Conte (W, 4-3) was credited with the win pitching the final 5.1 innings, allowing just one run on five hits. MCLA starter Sarah Williams (L, 3-7) allowed eight runs (three earned) on nine hits in three innings pitched while Hailey Peabody, who went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI at the plate, pitched the final two innings allowing four runs on six hits.

Westfield State will next take on Springfield College tomorrow afternoon while MCLA hosts Mass Maritime Academy in a MASCAC doubleheader on Saturday at 1pm.
