Volleyball: Bucs Lose Both Legs of Tri-Match in Battle with Dean and Fisher

BUZZARDS BAY, Mass -- The Buccaneers hosted Dean and Fisher on Saturday for their second and final home tri-match of the season. In the first match against Dean, the Bucs gave the Bulldogs a fight, ultimately losing three sets to none. In the second match, the Falcons, coming off a win over Dean in four sets, kept their momentum up against the Buccaneers winning in straight sets, 3-0.

 

Match one

The Basics

Final: Bulldogs 3, Buccaneers 0 (25-17, 25-18, 26-24)

Records: Dean 2-3

               Maritime 1-3

 

On The Court

For The Bucs

  • Shayla Narodowg led all Buccaneers with nine kills. Chloe Johnson added three as well.
  • Keira Whalen led the team in helpers with seven. Audrey Manning had six of her own. 
  • Victoria Chavez recorded three aces. Whalen and Narodowg each had two.
  • Captain Marlo Stark tallied a team-high 15 digs.
  • Whalen and Johnson combined for a block.
  • The Bucs finished the match with a .034 hitting percentage including a .667 from Whalen and a .529 from Narodowg.

For The Bulldogs

  • Sari Albury had 14 kills to lead all players in the match. Emily Larouche had six kills and Caitlin Cooper had four of her own. 
  • Bella Driscoll assisted on 28 points in the win, a match-high. 
  • Five players recorded two aces for the 'Dogs. 
  • Skylar Raskevitz had a match-high 20 digs. Larouche had 10 of her own. 
  • Albury had the only block for Dean.
  • Dean finished the match with a .187 hitting percentage, .481 from Albury.

How It Happened

Dean went out to a 7-2 advantage early in the first set. The Bucs picked up the slack bringing the deficit back to two points at 10-8. The Bulldogs then scored six unanswered to double up the Bucs, 16-8. Late in the set, down 24-12, Maritime, with Whalen on the service, scored five unanswered to get back within seven points. An attack error by the Bucs sealed the set for the Bulldogs on the ensuing serve giving Dean the set, 25-17.

Maritime went out to a 2-0 lead to begin the second set. That was followed by a small run to give Dean a 4-2 lead. There was a lot of back and forth between the teams as they traded points up to a 10-10 tie. Dean would win seven of the next 10 points to lead 17-13. The Bucs kept the lead at four points though they couldn't cut into it. Down 22-17, the Bucs scored one more point before the Bulldogs settled the set, 25-18, to take a 2-0 lead in the match.

In the third set, the Buccaneers grasped the momentum and took an early lead, leading by as many as seven points, 12-5. Dean closed the gap to four points, 14-10, but the Buccaneers hung on tight to the lead late in to the game. Maritime led 23-22 with the set win in site. The Bulldogs got back into it and tied the match at 23-23, then 24-24, followed by them taking the final two points on back-to-back kills by Cooper to win the exciting third set, 26-24, and the match, 3-0.

The Basics

Final: Falcons 3, Buccaneers 0 (25-18, 25-17, 25-13)

Records: Fisher 5-2

               Maritime 1-4

 

On The Court

For The Bucs

  • Shayla Narodowg once again led the Bucs in kills with eight. Keira WhalenIzabella Mackintosh, and Marlo Stark each recorded three kills. 
  • Whalen led the team in assists again with 13. Manning had three of her own from the libero position. 
  • Whalen recorded a match-high four aces in the match.
  • Manning led the Bucs in digs with 13. Stark tallied 12 and Whalen picked up 11. 
  • The Bucs posted another positive hitting percentage in the match, .029, with Whalen hitting at a .250 clip and Sydney McCarthy at .200.

For The Falcons

  • Macy Barnes recorded a match-high 13 kills. Ashly Velazquez had 10 in the win. 
  • Paola Velazques led the match in assists with 20 and led the Falcons in aces with three. 
  • Libero Edsyl Irizarry led the match in digs with 19. Natalia Ortiz also had 13 for the Falcons. 
  • Nathalie Rodriguez Cruz and Caroline Saucier both had a solo block in the match. Cruz and Aya Al-Juraishi combined for a block as well.
  • Fisher posted a .267 hitting percentage in the win with three players over a .400 hitting percentage.

How It Happened

Coming off their four set win over Dean, Fisher came out swinging against the Buccaneers. The Falcons started the match off with a 10-1 run. Though the Bucs pulled back within three points, 11-8, they couldn't quite get it all back. Down 17-9, Maritime went on a 5-0 run to make it 17-14. With some trading of points and serves, the Falcons went on to win the next eight of 12 points to take the first set, 25-18.

Maritime started the second set off by winning the first point. The score remained close, including the Bucs erasing a four-point deficit, down 7-3, to bring the game back even at 10-10. Fisher pulled ahead slightly but the Bucs didn't let them get away that easily. Keeping it to within two points, 18-16, late in the set, the Bucs hung tough. From there, the Falcons went on a 7-1 run to win the set, 25-17. 

The third set was Fisher's game to lose and they didn't let that happen. The Falcons went out to an 8-2 lead early and never looked back. With the Bucs sprinkling in points between Fisher runs they couldn't quite hang on to push the match to a fourth set. Fisher went on to win the third game, 25-13, and the match, 3-0.

The Buccaneers are back home on Wednesday, September 14th when they will open their MASCAC play with a match against Salem State at 7pm.
