Volleyball: Bucs Push Owls in Road Loss

WESTFIELD, Mass -- Volleyball closed out their 2022 campaign with a road conference match against Westfield State on Saturday. Though the Bucs fell in straight sets, they pushed the third set of the match past the 25-point mark and made the Owls earn a 29-27 set win to win the match.

Inside The Numbers

For The Bucs

  • Shayla Narodowg led the Bucs offensively with 11 kills, one off the pace of the match-high. Marlo Stark had nine kills of her own. 
  • Keira Whalen led all players in assists with 22.
  • Whalen and Stark each had two aces in the match.
  • Isabelle Miazga led the match defensively with 19 digs. Stark had 12 and Narodowg had 10. 
  • The Bucs had four blocks in the match, all block assists. Chloe Johnson racked up three, Whalen and Narodowg each had two and Sydney McCarthy tallied one. 
  • Maritime had a hitting percentage of .136, one of their highest of the season, and were led by Johnson who posted a .500 hitting percentage.

For The Owls

  • Shawna Crowley led all players with 12 kills. Sarah Bingham had nine. 
  • Julie Dangel-Garcia had 17 assists in the win. Morgan Dority tallied 14 helpers.
  • Allie Hill had a match-high six aces.
  • Hill and Dangel-Garcia each had 12 digs to lead the Owls.
  • Bingham and Julia Bartiet each had a solo block. Bartiet also had four block assists.
  • Westfield posted a .270 hitting percentage and were led by Bingham at .529.

How It Happened

Maritime opened the match by taking a quick 4-0 lead in the first set. They could not hold the momentum long as the Owls tied the game and then took a 6-5 lead and went on a run to open their lead to six, 15-9. The Bucs chipped at the deficit but would not be able to keep the Owls from going on another big run scoring 10 of the next 16 points to win the set 25-15.

Again, the Bucs took an early lead, this time in set two and they had a 3-1 lead that they opened to a three-point, 6-3 advantage. Slowly, the Owls cut into the Buccaneer lead and the teams went back and forth, tying the game at multiple points, 10-10, 13-13, 14-14. Then, Westfield took control and went on an 11-1 run to take the set, 25-15, and lead 2-0 in the match.

In the third set, Maritime again took an early lead in the game. In the third set, the Bucs would take their biggest lead of the match, leading 15-10 at one point. Though Westfield chipped in to the deficit again, this time, the Bucs held on to the lead and were up 23-22 late in the set. The two sides then traded points again and tied at 23-23, 24-24, 25-25, 26-26, and 27-27 before the Owls scored the final two straight points to win the set, 29-27, and the match, 3-0.
