Women’s Soccer draws with Mass Maritime 1-1

North Adams, MA- MCLA and MASCAC rival Mass Maritime played to a 1-1 draw this afternoon at Shewcraft Field. With the result the Trailblazers move to 1-5-2 (0-2-1 MASCAC) while the Buccaneers move to 1-4-3 (0-2-1 MASCAC).

The first half-hour of this one saw much of the play take place in the middle third. But in the 33rd minute Mass Maritime senior Ariel Damery (Plympton, MA) would find classmate Julia Podchaiski (Wallingford, CT) just inside of the box on the right side. Podchaiski took a quick look and let a shot go that beat MCLA senior keeper Jillian Currier (Troy, NY) on the far-left side giving the Buccaneers a 1-0 advantage that they would take into halftime.

MCLA would come out of the half with tremendous energy and carried the play early. In the 49th minute it appeared as though the Trailblazers would break through when senior midfielder Claudia Bresett (Adams, MA) stole a ball near midfield, broke in alone and lasered a shot which forced Mass Maritime sophomore keeper Reagan Kerecz (Tolland, CT) to make a diving save to her left to keep the Trailblazers off the scoreboard.

The home side would keep up the pressure and in the 61st minute it would pay off when first year Natalie Rich (Waterford, CT) deflected a pressured clearance attempt by the Buc keeper. Junior Anna Lewis (North Monmouth, ME) would collect the deflection, beat the last defender, and drill a right-footed shot that would hit the crossbar. Senior Savanna Amaral (Seekonk, MA) who was streaking down the left side would put the rebound home to tie the contest at 1-1. It was Amaral's first goal of the season.

Though the remainder of the contest was filled with back-and-forth action neither team would find the go-ahead goal.

Mass Maritime had a decided advantage in shots (21-9) and had one more corner kick in the match (3-2).

Buccaneer goalkeeper Reagan Kerecz made 3 saves and is now 1-0-1 on the season. Trailblazer keeper Jillian Currier who stopped 12 shots including 11 in the second half, now sits at 1-5-2.

Mass Maritime is off until Friday night when it will host MASCAC foe Westfield State at 7pm. MCLA is back in action Wednesday at 4pm as it travels to Utica to take on the Pioneers in nonconference action.
