McRae, Martin Lead UMW Women's Basketball Past Westfield State, 59-50


Junior guard Jenna McRae (Springfield, Va., Annandale) scored a game-high 19 points, and backcourtmate Rachel Martin (Annandale, Va., Bishop Ireton) added 10 points to lead the University of Mary Washington women's basketball team to a 59-50 victory over Westfield State University on Sunday evening in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Freshman guard Sam Partonen (Burke, Va., Robinson) added six points, seven steals, five rebounds, and four assists.

The Eagles jumped out to a 39-19 advantage at halftime, thanks to shooting 53% (16-30) from the floor in the opening frame, while limiting Westfield State to 23% shooting. UMW also caused 23 Westfield State turnovers, thanks to 14 steals.

The Eagles, winners of two straight, improve to 6-4 overall, will return to action on January 2 when they visit third-ranked Christopher Newport University.
