Deely Scores Six Time as Bucs Sink Mariners

BUZZARDS BAY, Mass – The Buccaneers hosted Maine Maritime in the final game of the Maritime Cup on Sunday morning. Junior captain Anna Deely (Barnstable, Mass) scored six times in the 17-2 victory. With seven points in the game, Deely reached the 100 career point mark as a Buccaneer.

 

The Basics

For The Bucs

  • Deely scored six times to lead all players in the game and added an assist. Deely also led all players with eight draw controls.
  • Junior captain Casey Sullivan (Sagamore Beach, Mass) scored four times in the game and had an assist.
  • Senior captain Cammi Balentine (Haverhill, Mass) and sophomore Alyssa Blumenthal (Braintree, Mass) each scored three goals in the win. Balentine added an assist.
  • Blumenthal assisted on six Maritime goals, a career high for the sophomore.
  • Freshman Paige Albertson (Nantucket, Mass) rounded out the scoring for the Bucs with her first career goal.
  • Sophomore Sarah Smialek (Dartmouth, Mass) recorded an assist in the game as well.
  • Junior defender Jennifer Leung (Quincy, Mass) led all players with seven ground balls.
  • Defensively, freshman Grace Calvert (Windsor, Mass) caused six turnovers. Deely caused four herself.
  • Sophomore goalkeeper Laura Kleber (Westport, Mass) picked up the win in the game but faced no shots in the game. Freshman Sue Bird (Duxbury, Mass) relieved Kleber late in the first half. She faced three shots, made one save and allowed two goals.

 

For The Mariners

  • Seniors Kristen Gier (Cary, Ill) and Chloe Smedley (York, Maine) each scored for the Mariners in the loss.
  • Gier picked up an assist on the Smedley goal.
  • Olivia Harriman (Orrington, Maine) picked up a team-high four ground balls for Maine.
  • Chloe Smedley also led her team in draw controls with three in the game.
  • Three players for the Mariners caused turnovers, Chloe and Reilly Smedley (York Maine) and Renaissance Lyman (Camden, Maine).
  • Sophomore goalkeeper Natasha Olearcek (Little Cranberry Island, Maine) faced 22 shots, made five saves and allowed the 17 Buccaneer goals.

 

Inside The Numbers

  • The Buccaneers outshot Maine 23-4 in the game. All of Maine's shots came in the second half.
  • Mass Maritime picked up 38 ground balls to Maine's 18.
  • The Bucs were 4-for-5 in converting free position shots.
  • Mass won 13 of the 20 draw controls in the game. Maine won five to the Bucs three in the second half.

 

How It Happened

The Buccaneers opened the scoring in this one just over two minutes in. Deely scored on a free position shot. A minute later, Sullivan netted her first and Blumenthal picked up her first of six assists on the day. Deely scored again two minutes later, on a pass from Smialek, with her team down a player due to penalty. Up 3-0, Deely's second goal would go down as the game winner for the Bucs. The Academy went on to score nine more goals in the first half, including a man-up goal from Balentine and Albertson's first career goal and a goal from Sullivan with one second left on the clock before the half. The Bucs took their 12-0 lead in to the halftime break.

In the second half, Blumenthal scored five minutes in to put the Bucs up 13-0. Gier was awarded a free position opportunity for the Mariners three minutes later and she capitalized on the opportunity erasing the Mass Maritime shutout. Over the next 10 minutes, Deely scored twice, Blumenthal scored once and the Buccaneers found themselves up 16-1. Smedley scored for Maine on a pass from Gier with seven minutes to play to make the score 16-2. Late in the game, with 28 seconds left on the clock, Deely scored her sixth goal, her seventh point of the day, to make the score 17-2, the eventual final. The team took the time to recognize Deely's achievement of 100 career points.
