Booker Boosts Bucs Past Blazers in Conference Doubleheader

BUZZARDS BAY, Mass -- The winless in conference Buccaneers softball hosted MCLA in MASCAC play on Saturday and thanks to five extra base hits, two home runs, from Kelsey Booker, including a walkoff in game two, the Bucs swept the Trailblazers, 9-4 and 7-6. 

 

Game One

MCLA

  • Hailey Peabody had the only multi-hit game for MCLA with a double and a home run.
  • Ella Staffier, Magie Closinski, and Madyson Torres all had one hit. Closinski added a double.
  • Peabody drove in three runs and Staffier knocked in one.
  • Peabody scored twice, Torres and Hannah Mitchem scored once.
  • Staffier was credited with a stolen base in the loss.

How It Happened

The first sparks flew in the doubleheader in the top of the first on Peabody's solo home run to right center. In the bottom of the inning, Patane hit a two-run home run to score herself and Booker and the Bucs led 2-1 after an inning.

In the top of the second, Peabody doubled to bring in two runs and give the Trailblazers the lead back, 3-2. Staffier later singled to right and scored Peabody. In the bottom of the frame, the Buccaneers answered again. Kerecz drove in two runs followed by a Booker two-run homer to left field. The Bucs took back the lead and were up 6-4 after two innings. 

The third went scoreless and so did the top of the fourth and in the bottom half of the fourth, Holler reached on a throwing error by MCLA that allowed Booker and Burton to score and the Bucs went up 8-4.

In the bottom of the fifth, Maritime added some more insurance on a sacrifice fly from Burton that scored Kerecz. Klemp went on to face seven batters over the next two innings in the circle and retired the side in the top of the seventh to secure the game one victory, 9-4.

Maritime

  • Hannah BurtonKelsey Booker, and Ashleigh Catlett all had two hits in the win including a home run and a double for Booker and a double for Burton.
  • Ab'c'de Patane and Jennamarie Klemp each had one hit.
  • Booker drove in three runs in the game. Kerecz and Burton drove in one apiece.
  • Burton and Catlett scored twice, Booker, Makynzie Sprague, and Klemp all scored once.

MCLA

  • Pardi had a home run in the game and Peabody, Staffier, and Albright each had a double.
  • Peabody was credited with two stolen bases in the loss.

How It Happened

MCLA scored first again in game two with a run in the first thanks to a fielding error by the Buccaneers. The Trailblazers led 1-0 after one.

Neither team scored in the second and Catlett sat down the Blazers in order in the third. In the bottom of the third, Burton doubled to left to bring in Catlett and Booker later reached on a fielder's choice that allowed Burton to score from third. The Bucs led, 2-1, after three innings.

After a scoreless fourth, MCLA struck in the top of the fifth. Woyton singled to score Staffier and Pardi homered bringing in two runs. The Trailblazers jumped on top, 4-2. 

In the top of the sixth, Peabody doubled bringing in Albright and the Bucs were chasing three runs, down 5-2. In the bottom of the sixth, on a double steal, Patane was caught stealing and Sprague scored from third to cut the deficit to two runs, 5-3, after six.

In the top of the seventh, Teta singled and drove in Woyton and the Trailblazers were back up 6-3. Staring a split of the conference doubleheader in the face, the Buccaneers refused to go away in the bottom of the seventh. Kerecz hit a sacrifice fly that scored Klemp after she pinch hit earlier in the inning. Burton then walked and brought in Catlett in the process. With Burton on second base and the Bucs trailing 6-5, Booker stepped up and hit her second home run of the day on a 3-2 count with two outs in the bottom of the seventh to walk the Buccaneers off with a 7-6 win and a sweep of the Trailblazers.

 

What's Next

Maritime is on the road on Monday, April 15th to take on Bridgewater State in conference play beginning at 12:30pm.
