Fitchburg State Completes Weekend Sweep Over Baseball

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. – The MCLA Baseball team welcomed Fitchburg State to Joe Wolfe Field this afternoon for a MASCAC doubleheader against the Falcons.

HOW IT WENT DOWN

  • Game #1
    • Fitchburg State knocked out 15 hits en route to scoring 15 runs. Designate hitter Matthew Smith went 3-3 at the plate with a pair of doubles and six runs batted in.
    • The Falcons catcher Jacob Hurrell hit his MASCAC-leading eighth home run of the season in the top of the sixth inning as part of a two-hit game with two runs scored and three more driven in.
    • MCLA scored their lone run when first baseman Chris Vargas led off the second inning by driving an 0-2 pitch over the left-center field fence. The homer was Vargas' second in his last three games.
    • Starting pitcher Joseph Stawski scattered seven hits over six innings for Fitchburg State, picking up his second win of the season and improving his record to 2-3. The Trailblazers' starter, Aiden Brett, took the loss and fell to 0-3 for the year.
  • Game #2
    • The Falcons' bats continued to fly high in the day's second game, including a pair of two-run homers by Hurrell and left-fielder Adam Koza. Hurrell's extended his MASCAC-leading total to nine while Koza moved into second in the conference with his sixth long ball of the season.
    • The reigning NCBWA National Hitter of the Week and MCLA right-fielder Clarence Givhans went 3-4 at the plate in game two with three doubles, including a one-out two-bagger in the fifth that scored Justin Herandez from first base for the Trailblazers' only run.
    • Shane Daly went the distance for Fitchburg, allowing only six hits over seven innings while striking out six to pick up his first win of the year, upping his record to 1-4. MCLA starting pitcher Joshua Bissaillon went the first five innings only allowing four hits, but still picked up the loss, dropping to 1-5.

UP NEXT:

On Tuesday, MCLA will be back in action when they play host to Westfield State for a MASCAC matchup with the Owls at the Zavattaro Athletics Complex. The first pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
