Pena Collects Three Hits, Givhans Homers Again but Baseball Defeated by Mass. Maritime

BUZZARDS BAY, Mass. – The MCLA Baseball team wrapped up their MASCAC series with the Mass. Maritime Buccaneers this afternoon at the Commodore William R. Hendy Field. Jayco Pena collected three hits, and Clarence Givhans homered for the fourth time in his last four games but were done in by a pair of four-run innings by the Buccaneers.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • With MCLA playing this relocated game as the home team, Mass. Maritime got the first wraps and put them to good use, scoring three runs on three hits before the Trailblazers had an opportunity to bat.
  • While MCLA got back one of those runs in the bottom of the second inning on Justin Hernandez's sacrifice fly that brought home Rob Correia, the Buccaneers put up a four spot in the fourth inning, making the most of three hits, two hit batters and two walks.
  • The Trailblazers attempted to scrape their way back into the game, scoring two runs in the fourth and sixth innings to cut the lead to 7-5. The runs in the fourth inning came on an Edison Galan double down the left field line that scored Chris Vargas and an RBI groundout from Ty Mazzeo, bringing home Hernandez. The sixth-inning runs were both scored on a two-run home run by Clarence Givhans after Mazzeo had reached on an error.
  • Mass. Maritime scored five insurance runs, four in the top of the eighth and one in the top of the ninth inning.
  • MMA's Justin Brown threw three and a third innings of three-hit relief to pick up his second win of the year, evening his record at 2-2. Nate Morse took the loss for the Trailblazers, falling to 1-4.

UP NEXT:

On Monday, MCLA will be back in action when they travel to Westfield State for a MASCAC matchup with the Owls at Bud and Jim Hagan Field. The first pitch is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
