FRAMINGHAM, Mass. – MCLA's Clarence Givhans went four for four with two home runs and five RBIs, but Framingham put together a 17-run sixth inning before holding on for a 27-18 MASCAC win this afternoon at Bowditch Field.

THE BASICS:

  • Date: Tuesday, April 9, 2024
  • Score: MCLA 18, Framingham State 27
  • Records: MCLA Trailblazers 4-13 (MASCAC 1-3) | Framingham State Rams 3-11 (MASCAC 2-2)

HIGHLIGHTS

  • MCLA scored at least one run in each of the first five innings to build a 13-6 lead in exciting fashion. The Trailblazers got solo home runs from Clarence Givhans in the first and third innings, and with runners on the corners in the second, Ty Mazzeo stole home as part of a double steal with Henry Blake.
  • RBI singles from the Trailblazers' Edison Galan and Givhans scored the first two runs of the fourth inning before an RBI double from Jayco Pena brought home the third. Two more runs came around to score when Rob Correia's grounder to third was airmailed over the first baseman.
  • MCLA matched their five-run fourth inning with a five-run fifth inning. The first run scored on a bases-loaded walk to Galan. Givhans then pulled a two-RBI double down the rightfield line ahead of Jayco Pena, scoring Galan with an RBI groundout to the second baseman. Mazzeo finished the scoring with a sacrifice fly to bring Givhans around.
  • The Rams sent 22 batters to the plate in the bottom of the sixth inning to collect nine hits and, making the Trailblazers pay for four walks, four hit batters, and an error to put up the largest single inning run total in the MASCAC in at least 15 years to pull ahead 23-13.
  • Despite the overwhelming odds, MCLA did not just go away, responding with a four-run seventh inning to cut the deficit to a more manageable six runs. Chris Vargas knocked in the first run with an RBI single up the middle before Josh Bologh hit a three-run home run to left.
  • However, Framingham State responded with their own four-run seventh inning to restore the 10-run edge.
  • The Trailblazers did scratch one more run across in the eighth inning when Galan knocked a solo shot for MCLA's fourth home run of the afternoon.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE

  • The four home runs that MCLA hit this afternoon were the most they have had in one game since hitting four in a 17-1 win over Fitchburg State last season.
