Softball Takes Two Over Framingham State; Castro Hits Milestone

BOSTON, Mass. – The Wentworth Institute of Technology softball team (10-4) slid back into the win column Friday afternoon on a pair of impressive wins over Framingham State (5-7) in non-conference action on home turf.

Wentworth's first victory of the afternoon was the 50th of her career for Leopards' head coach Erica Castro.

GAME ONE: WENTWORTH 6, FRAMINGHAM STATE 0

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • The Black & Gold notched the first score in the bottom of the third inning, as a double by graduate student Briana Beverly (Pawcatuck, Conn.) ran in senior Kaitlin Pettenger (Budd Lake, N.J.), giving the hosts a 1-0 edge.
  • Two innings later, Wentworth's offense came alive as a ground-rule double from senior Julia Bollentin (South Kingstown, R.I.) with the bases loaded brought in two runs, extending Wentworth's advantage to 3-0. At the next at-bat, senior Erin Hancock (Holden, Mass.) got on base thanks to a muffed throw that also brought in scores from Bollentin and freshman Kyla Igawa (Long Beach, Calif.), raising the Leopards' lead to 5-0.
  • A double by senior Julia Hutchinson (North Billerica, Mass.) on the next at-bat drove in Hancock, bringing Wentworth's advantage to 6-0.
  • Hancock shut down the Rams' offense on the mound, striking out nine and only surrendering five hits. Offensively, the Leopards were led by Bollentin (2-3, 2 RBI) as six student-athletes recorded a hit in the outing.

GAME TWO: WENTWORTH 4, FRAMINGHAM STATE 2

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • In the bottom of the second, a single by Pettenger with two runners on base drove in sophomore Jess Rowe (Yardley, Pa.), giving Wentworth a 1-0 lead. With Pettenger and Hutchinson on base, a Beverly single paired with an error drove in both runners, marking a 3-0 advantage for the hosts.
  • The Rams started their march back in the fourth inning, as a sacrifice fly brought home sophomore Brooke Grassia (Danvers, Mass.) to cut the deficit to 3-1. An inning later, Grassia drove in another run with the bases loaded to dwindle the lead to 3-2.
  • In the later portion of the fifth inning, an Igawa ground-out brought home graduate student Alexandra Pina (Cumberland, R.I.) to mark a 4-2 score.
  • Framingham State had the tying runs on in the seventh but couldn't come back.
  • On the mound, freshman Julie Schriver (Moscow, Pa.) struck out five across 4.1 innings before Hancock struck out three in relief. On offense, Pettenger, Beverly, and Igawa all claimed a RBI while Pina went 2-3 at the plate, including a triple.

SERIES NOTES:

  • Today's victories were the first-ever for the Leopards against the Rams.
