Bucs Sweep Cadets in Saturday Matinee

BUZZARDS BAY, Mass -- The Buccaneers hosted Norwich on Saturday in a non-conference doubleheader. The Buccaneers offense exploded for 19 runs in the two games and took down the Cadets 10-3 in game one, and 9-7 in game two.

 

Game One

Maritime

  • Reagan KereczKelsey Booker, and Ab'c'de Patane recorded three hits in the game. Hannah Burton added two hits, and Natalie GaleCamryn WhitmanRubi Butler, and Eva Warren all had one hit.
  • Booker drove in four runs in the game, two of which came on her first home run. Kerecz, Patane, Burton, Whitman, Butler, and Warren all had an RBI.
  • Gale, Booker, and Patane scored twice in the win. Kerecz, Whitman, Butler, and Warren scored once.
  • Warren and Patane each had a triple, Booker hit two doubles, and Gale and Whitman both had doubles.

Norwich

  • Six different Cadets had hits in the loss. 
  • Madison DeCota had three RBI that all came on her first home run.
  • Hailey Williams, DeCota, and Brianna Vitale all scored.

 

How It Happened

Booker started the run fest for the Buccaneer in the bottom of the first with an RBI double, driving in Kerecz, and the Bucs led 1-0 after one inning.

In the third, Booker hit her second double of the game and drove in Gale to put the Bucs up 2-0. Patane later singled to bring in Booker, and the Bucs led 3-0 after three innings.

Warren extended the Buccaneers lead in the fourth with her first-career triple, driving in Butler, and Kerecz followed that with a single to bring in Warren, and Maritime led 5-0 after four.

In the top of the fifth, the Cadets gave the Buccaneers a scare as DeCota helped herself by going deep to drive in three runs and bring Norwich within two runs, 5-3. In the bottom of the fifth, Maritime extended the lead back out to four runs. Whitman drove in Patane on a fielder's choice, and Butler singled in Whitman to make the score 7-3 after five.

The Bucs weren't done in game one, putting up three more runs in the bottom of the sixth. Two came on Bookers first homer of the season, and Burton drove in Patance on a single to give the Bucs a 10-3 lead.

Klemp and the Bucs defense shut the door in the seventh to earn the 10-3 win in the first game.

  • Hailey Williams and Maren McGinn recorded three hits in the loss. Emily Munson, Rachel Kempf, and Kelcie Petrone all had two hits. Courtney Thomas added one hit.
  • Munson, McGinn, and Kempf all drove in two runs. Williams knocked in one.
  • Williams scored twice, and five other Cadets scored once.
  • Williams had a triple and a double in the game. McGinn recorded three doubles, and Thomas, Kempf, and Petrone all had one two-bagger.
  • Madison DeCota and Petrone each had a stolen bag.

 

How It Happened

Norwich scored in the top of the first to take a 1-0 lead. Their first of the day. In the bottom of the first, the Bucs scored one to tie the game at 1-1. 

In the top of the second, the Cadets took their second lead of the game on a Williams single that brought in Petrone. Norwich led 2-1 after two innings.

In the bottom of the third, the Buccaneers tied the game and took their first lead in game two. Booker singled, and Ross came in to score on an error. Gale proceeded to double and bring in Booker to score to give the Bucs a 3-2 lead. Burton followed with a single to score Gale, and Maritime opened a two-run, 4-2, lead after three.

After a scoreless fourth, the Cadets scored three in the top of the fifth, one on a McGinn double and two on a Kempf double. Norwich was up 5-4 after four and a half innings of play. In the bottom of the fifth frame, the Bucs struck again, this time for five runs. Burton started it with a two-RBI single to give Maritime a 6-5 advantage. Burton came in to score on a Whitman double, and Catlett came across on a Norwich miscue, opening up a three-run lead for the Buccaneers, 8-5. Kerecz capped off the innings with and RBI single that brought in Whitman, and the Bucs led 9-5 after five.

In the top of the sixth, Norwich got two runs back to make it a two-run game, 9-7 on a Munson single to left. 

In the top of the seventh, the Cadets threatened again. They loaded the bases with one out needing two to tie. Patane made a huge heads-up play to cut down a runner at home and preserve the two-run lead with two outs in the inning, then Catlett got DeCota to ground out to third to earn the 9-7 victory in game two and a sweep of Norwich.

The Buccaneers are at Albertus Magnus on Sunday, March 23rd, for a non-conference doubleheader with the Falcons beginning at 12 pm.
