Women's Volleyball: Barnes, Falcons sweep past Fitchburg State

BROOKLINE, MASS. – The Fisher College Women's Volleyball team defended home court this evening as they defeated visiting Fitchburg State University, 3-0 in the season's home opener at the Pappas Gymnasium. Fisher was victorious by set scores of 26-24, 25-17, and 25-13 to improve to 3-1 on the year while Fitchburg evens out their overall record at 1-1.

Senior Macy Barnes (Durate, Calif.) led the way offensively as she hammered down a game-high 14 kills while classmate Aya Al-Juraishi (Walnut, Calif.) chipped in with six winners. Sophomore Paola Velazquez (Caguas, Puerto Rico) dished out 21 assists and fellow sophomore Edsyl Irizarry (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico) collected 17 digs along the back line. Freshman Caroline Saucier (Sarasota, Fla.) also shined brightly this evening as she finished with four kills and two total blocks.

Fitchburg State was guided by the offensive efforts from freshman Stephanie Sardella (Billerica, Mass.) and sophomore Samantha Mirra (Burlington, Mass.), who each led the team with five kills. Senior Meridith Taylor (Reading, Mass.) handed out six helpers while Mirra led the defensive effort with a game-high 19 digs.

Fisher will return to action tomorrow night as they host Nichols College at 7pm. Fitchburg State, meanwhile, will be back on the court on Saturday as they host Nichols and Curry College beginning at 11am.
