UMass Dartmouth senior linebacker Tony Slaughter was one of 26 student-athletes named to the D3football.com Team of the Week for his performance in last Saturday’s 28-12 Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference victory at Western Connecticut.
A native of Springfield, Mass. and a graduate of Chicopee High School, Slaughter registered 13 total tackles that included 12 solo stops and a pair of sacks in the triumph for the Corsairs. Tony collected three tackles for losses of 11 yards on the night, and in the process broke Marvey Mathurin’s single-season school record for tackles for loss with 18 stops to date. Slaughter, who ranks fourth nationally in NCAA Division III play with 2.3 tackles for loss per game, was tabbed as the MASCAC Defensive Player of the Week for the second time this fall for his efforts.
Tony ranks second on the team in tackles with 50 stops (34 solo) over UMass Dartmouth’s first eight games, and he has added a pair of forced fumbles, a fumble recovery, two pass breakups and a pair of blocked kicks along the way. Slaughter leads the Corsairs with six sacks totaling 38 yards in losses, and he enters the final two weeks of the regular season eight stops shy of Derek Tarpey’s career tackles for loss mark of 44.5.
Head Coach Mark Robichaud’s squad, which has already posted its highest victory total in 11 years, brings a 6-2 overall slate into Saturday afternoon’s MASCAC Senior Day matchup with Massachusetts Maritime at Cressy Field that kicks off at Noon EST.
