BUZZARDS BAY, Mass. - The Worcester State University football team continues to seek its first win after falling 28-13 to Mass. Maritime Saturday afternoon in Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference action at Clean Harbors Stadium.
With the loss, the Lancers drop to 0-5 on the season and 0-3 in the MASCAC. The Buccaneers stay unbeaten at 4-0 and 2-0.
Lancer quarterback Aaron-Moses Williams (Springfield, Mass.) had his strongest outing of the season, completing 30 of his 41 pass attempts for 405 yards and two touchdowns. Tight end Colin Robinson (Centerville, Mass.) caught seven passes for a game high 156 yards, while rookie wide receiver Cam Kergo (Mashpee, Mass) caught a game-high 10 passes for 140 yards and two touchdowns.
Defensively, AJ Byard (Deerfield Beach, Fla) led the Lancers with eight total tackles. He also had a sack for a loss of seven yards. Gus Ramstrom (Natick, Mass) had the only other sack of the game for Worcester to go along with five tackles. Noah Peterson (Millbury, Mass) intercepted the Buccaneers and had two tackles.
Buccaneer senior quarterback Matt Long (Weymouth, Mass) went 10-for-19 through the air for 72 yards and an interception. On the ground, he ran the ball 25 times for 160 yards and three touchdowns. Long also caught a 13-yard pass from wide receiver Will Bennett (Sandwich, Mass).
Neither team scored in the opening quarter, but the Lancers got on the board on their first offensive play of the second quarter. From 30 yards out, Williams connected with Kergo to put the Lancers up 7-0. Later in the second quarter, the Buccaneers tied the game on a three-yard run by Long to cap off an 11-play, 70-yard drive. The score remained tied 7-7 as the teams went to their respective locker rooms.
To open the second half, Worcester received the opening kick and proceeded to go 65 yards in three plays to retake the lead 13-7 after a missed PAT. The touchdown was the only scoring in the third quarter.
Maritime opened the fourth quarter by scoring on a five-play, 80-yard drive to take the lead at 14-13. Long scored the touchdown on a 41-yard scramble, followed by Lampros' extra point. After shutting down the ensuing Worcester possession with an interception, the Buccaneers began a drive at the Lancer 8-yard line. Moments later, Long would punch in his third rushing touchdown of the day to put his team up 21-13.
The Buccaneers sealed the deal late by recovering a Lancer fumble in the end zone.
Worcester State will return home next weekend for a Friday night contest against Bridgewater State. Kickoff from Coughlin Field is scheduled for 7 p.m.
