@yorkcardinals Men’s Basketball collide with Westfield State in York Invitational title game

The Cardinals remain at home on December 30 to take on Connecticut College in a non-conference bout inside York College Gymnasium


JAMAICA, NY --- (www.YORKATHLETICS.comYork College men's basketball closed out play at the York Invitational with a 101-71 setback in the title game to the Westfield State University Owls (10-2) inside York College Gymnasium.  Devine Chisholm (17.0 points, 4.0 assists. 4.0 rebounds per game) and Quran Dublin (18.5 points, 7.0 assists, 5.0 rebounds, and 4.5 steals per game) represented the Cardinals on the 2021 All-York College Invitational Team.  In Saturday's opener, St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) defeated Keystone College in the consolation game, 80-74.

How it Happened​​​​​​
  • The Cardinals jumped out to a quick 5-2 lead with a triple by Chisholm followed by a Dublin layup at the 17:18 mark. 
  • Westfield State answered with 12-straight points to make it a 14-5 game before extending its lead to 16 (27-11) with 10:20 showing on the first-half clock.
  • Trailing by as many as 18 points (47-29) in the opening stanza, York pecked away at its deficit with a 13-6 spurt over the final 3:33 as the Owls held a 53-42 advantage at intermission.
  • Westfield State increased its lead to 15 (61-46) early in the second-half to prompt a York timeout. 
  • The Cardinals used a Donald Hartley Jr. three-pointer to ignite a 10-0 run to pull York within five with 13:44 remaining. 
  • Westfield State replied with 13-straight points to push the lead to 18 (74-56). 
  • Moments later, the Owls went on a 19-4 scoring spree to build a 29-point advantage (93-64) with 3:52 showing left.  

Inside the Box Score
Chisholm and Hartley Jr. both poured in 18 points on similarly efficient shooting while knocking down 2-of-4 from three-point range.  Dublin followed up with 17 points, converting on all ten of his free-throws, and nabbed four steals.  Guillermo Hernandez chipped in eight points and nine rebounds.  

Westfield State had an overall balanced offensive attack with four of their starters scoring in double figures. Hamilton led Westfield State with 19 points (6-of-11 FG, 7-of-7 FT) and 20 rebounds. Joseph Meade provided efficient offense off the bench with 19 points on 7-of-9 shooting from the floor.

York finished the game hitting on 37.3 percent from the field (22-of-59), 27.8 percent from three-point land (5-of-18) and 75.9 percent from the free-throw land (22-of-29) as the Owls landed 47.2 percent from the floor (34-of-72), 31.8 percent from deep (7-of-22) and 89.7 percent from the stripe (26-of-29).  Westfield State won the boards battle, 53-29, scoring 16 second-chance points off 18 rebounds.  The Owls also owned the edge in assists (26-8), steals (8-4) and blocks (4-1) while converting 12 Cardinal miscues into 21 points.
