Western New England returns to action with non-conference loss at Worcester State

WORCESTER, Mass.
- Playing its first game since the holiday break, the Western New England women's basketball team suffered a 67-60 loss against host Worcester State in a non-conference contest Wednesday afternoon (Jan. 5).

The Golden Bear are now 7-3 after dropping their third road decision of the season while the Lancers improve to 6-5 after ending a mild two-game skid.

Junior guard Kaleigh Charette (Fairhaven, MA) had 20 points and eight rebounds for Worcester. Senior guard Kathryn Foley (Hudson, NH) added 15 points coming off the bench.

Charette totaled 13 of her points in the opening half as the hosts took a 36-27 advantage at the break.

Trailing by  11, WNEC clawed back getting within 57-51 following a free throw by sophomore center Elena Radzikowski (Medway, MA) with 5:20 remaining.

The Lancers answered with six straight points and the Golden Bears couldn't catch up.

Radzikowski had a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds. Senior forward Kelly McCormick (Manchester, CT) and sophomore guard Shelby Van Huysen (Killingworth, CT) each contributed 12 points. Van Huysen also pulled down eight rebounds.

This was "Math Madness" Day at WSU and a large, noisy crowd of 650 (mostly elementary grade school children) were in attendance. Students from three local schools received a math packet with questions about basketball, including player stats court dimensions, etc. Worcester State's math department sponsored the event.
