Chelsea Vujs' Double-Double Helps Western New England Pull Away in Second Half

NORTH ADAMS, Mass.--Sophomore Chelsea Vujs scored a team-best 18 points and hauled in a game-high 13 rebounds to lead visiting Western New England to a 77-61 non-conference women's basketball win over the MCLA Trailblazers in the Amsler Campus Center Gym on Thursday. Western New England evens its mark at 2-2 while the Trailblazers fall to 1-2 on the season.

Besides Vujs making seven of 11 field goals to set the tone for the Golden Bears, she also had five assists. Law School student Nicole Daly finished right behind her with a personal-record 17 points, which included a perfect 4-for-4 from three-point land. Alicia Lewis chipped in off the bench with 10 points for another scoring milestone for WNE. Senior co-captain Katie Eckert did a bit of everything filling the stat sheet with nine points, 12 rebounds, three assists and three steals, and senior Shaylyn Sicard added a game-high six assists.

MCLA was led by Danielle Scolpino who finished with a game-high 22 points on 6-of-12 shooting. Ashley Clawson was the only other Trailblazer in double figures, chipping in with 14 points. Clawson and Michaela Siver each collected five assists.

Both sides played well in the opening frame which saw seven ties and neither team led by more than six. The Golden Bears scored the final three points of the half to grab a 35-32 lead at halftime.

Following the break, however, the Golden Bears began to assert themselves, particularly on the glass. Through six-and-a-half minutes of play in the closing half, WNE held a slim 48-45 lead after Clawson knocked down one of the Trailblazers' eight 3-pointers in the game. From there, the visitors took over.

Western New England went on a 7-0 run capped off by a three-point play from Lewis to grab a 55-45 lead. The 'Bears extended the lead to 65-52 following a Vujs layup with just over five minutes remaining. MCLA trimmed the margin to nine following a pair of Scolpino free throws, but then Daly drilled a trey on the next possession to send WNE on its way.

Western New England outrebounded MCLA 43-24 in the contest, including a 23-7 edge after intermission.

The Golden Bears will battle Framingham State on Saturday (3 p.m.) at home at the Alumni Healthful Living Center field house, while the Trailblazers will travel to Daniel Webster.
