DUDLEY, Mass. – Freshman Jillian Krish (Rockland, Mass.) scored her third goal of the season for Nichols College, which suffered a 2-1 setback in double-overtime at the hands of Fitchburg State in non-conference women's soccer action Thursday afternoon at the Nichols Soccer Field.
Senior Gabriella Sarkis (Springfield, Mass.) picked up the assist on Krish's marker as the Bison fell back to the .500 mark at 5-5-0. Freshman Samantha Zina (Abington, Mass.) scored both goals for the Falcons (3-5-0) – including the game-winner with less than three minutes remaining in the second extra session.
The Falcons held a 10-4 edge in shots through the opening 45 minutes, but neither team was able to break the donut on the scoreboard. Zina's first marker of the season on a penalty kick at 67:30 gave Fitchburg State a short-lived 1-0 lead.
Less than 10 minutes after Zina's marker, Sarkis fed Krish for a chip shot that sailed over senior goalkeeper Jillian Kirouac (Leominster, Mass.) and into the net, evening the match at one. Regulation ended with the Falcons ahead in shots, 16-10.
Zina send the Bison home with their second double-OT loss in their last three matches when she chased down a pass from junior Kayla Bridges (Maynard, Mass.) and poked the ball into the left side of the net, behind junior goalkeeper Sarah Whitestone (Dalton, Mass.).
Fitchburg State finished with a 19-14 advantage in shots. Both goalkeepers tallied seven saves. Kirouac moves to 3-5-0 with the win while Whitestone is now 5-4-0.
Nichols heads to Western New England on Saturday for a 1:30 p.m. match. Fitchburg State plays at Massachusetts Maritime at noon on Saturday.
