Women's Basketball Sets Block Record in 71-40 Win over Fitchburg State

NEW LONDON, N.H. – November 15, 2015 – The Colby-Sawyer women's basketball team set a single game program record with 15 blocks in Sunday's season opening 71-40 victory over Fitchburg State University.

The Chargers improve to 1-0 and will play their final game of November next Saturday at Suffolk with a 1 p.m. tip. The Falcons drop to 0-2 and will play their next two games at home beginning on Tuesday against Clark at 5:30 p.m.

Colby-Sawyer led from the opening tip and it was the team defense that helped sustain the momentum throughout the game. The team finished with 15 blocks breaking the previous game record of 13 swats set against Anna Maria on January 17, 2006.

In the first 10 minutes of action, in a game that now features four 10-minute quarters, the Chargers held an 18-6 advantage on the scoreboard and never looked back. Colby-Sawyer increased its lead in the second quarter to 20 to head into halftime with a 39-19 lead. The third quarter saw Colby-Sawyer outscore Fitchburg 16-7, while the fourth was played closely with the home team holding a slim 16-14 edge resulting in a 71-40 final score.

Junior Lexi Iannone (North Haven, Conn.) led 12 Colby-Sawyer players who scored with 14 points. She added five steals, four blocks and four rebounds. Sophomore Amanda Calvo (South Deerfield, Mass.) was 6-for-11 to finish with 14 points. Junior Marquis MacGlashing (Cape Neddick, Maine) filled the stat sheet with seven points, eight rebounds, five blocks and four steals.

The Falcons were led by a 12-point effort from junior Erika Schneider (Rockland, Mass.). She was 8-for-12 from the free throw line and added seven rebounds. Junior Melissa Guglielmello (Paxton, Mass.) chipped in eight points and seven boards.

The Chargers turned 25 Falcon miscues into 21 points and also outscored the visitors 14-0 in fast break points.
