Falcons Defeated By Lancers, 73-44

Worcester, Mass. – The sixth seeded Falcons of Fitchburg State dropped a 73-44 decision to the third seeded Lancers of Worcester State this evening in quarterfinal round action of the 2019-20 Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) Women's Basketball post-season tournament at the John P. Brissette Court.

How It Happened

1st quarter

Worcester State took the lead on an Erin Gallella (Tewksbury, Mass.) three pointer before Fitchburg State answered with a bucket from senior Catherine Coppinger (Boston, Mass.). The Lancers went on a 9-0 run, capped by a Mya Mosley (Worcester, Mass.) put back for the 12-2 advantage.

The Green and Gold cut the deficit to 12-5 as senior Angelina Marazzi (Manchester, N.H.) drilled a trey. Worcester State pushed its margin to 18-5 as Mosely netted a jumper, but the Falcons chipped the lead to 18-7 with a jumper from junior Mishelle Logie (Attleboro, Mass.).

2nd quarter

Fitchburg State chipped the lead to 26-14 with freshman Shannon Fitzgerald (Billerica, Mass.) burying a three-pointer before Worcester State upped its advantage (30-14) on a Mosley layup. The Falcons continued to battle with Fitzgerald hitting a pair from the charity stripe and a Marazzi layup, but the Lancers took a 37-20 margin into the break on a Gallella jumper.

3rd quarter

Following the intermission, Worcester State pushed its lead to 41-20 on a Catherine Sweeney (Lowell, Mass.) layup. Fitchburg State cut the deficit to 48-24 on a Marazzi bucket, but senior Sam Ellis (Grafton, Mass.) knocked down a three pointer for the Lancers for the 57-28 margin.

 4th quarter

The Falcons opened the fourth quarter with layups from junior Payton Holmes (Carver, Mass.), Fitzgerald and senior Emma Thomson (York, Maine). Worcester State secured the victory though as Ellis hit a layup, resulting in the 73-44.

Inside the Numbers

  • Falcons were paced by Marazzi with team-best 12 points, seven boards, two assists and two steals
  • Coppinger added nine points, 11 boards,
  • For the Lancers, Mosley finished with game-best 19 points and three rebounds
  • Ellis chipped in with 11 points for Worcester State
  • 83rd meeting between the two teams on the basketball court with the Falcons 21-62 all-time when taking on the Lancers
  • Fitchburg State shot 17-of-63 (33.3%) from the field and (3-for-13) 23.1% from downtown
  • Worcester State went 28-of-65 (43.1%) overall and (6-for-19) 31.6% for beyond the arc
  • Worcester State held a 41-33 edge on the glass

Falcons conclude their 2019-20 season with an overall record of 6-20 and a 3-9 mark in the MASCAC. Lancers advance to the semifinal round and will travel to the second seeded Owls of Westfield State on Thursday at a time to be determined.
