Field Hockey Falls to Westfield State, 4-0

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. – The Westfield State University field hockey team blanked visiting Bridgewater State University, 4-0, on Saturday at Alumni Field.

The Owls improve to 4-6 on the season and 1-3 in the Little East, while the Bears fall to 0-7 overall and 0-3 in conference play.

Junior forward Marina Small (South Harwich, Mass.) opened the scoring just 2:15 into the game off an assist from sophomore forward Cheryl Latona (Granby, Conn.).

Sophomore forward Allie Giguere (Lynn, Mass.) potted a pair of goals just 79 seconds apart late in the second quarter to make it a 3-0 game at the break. Freshman midfielder Sophie Morini (Florence, Mass.) assisted on Giguere's first goal which came in the 28th minute of the contest. Then, with just 52 seconds showing on the scoreboard, Giguere converted off a penalty corner with Small picking up the helper.

Sophomore forward Rachel Anzivino (Rockport, Mass.) scored off a penalty corner with 3:28 remaining in the third quarter to round out the scoring. Morini notched her second assist of the day on Anzivino's tally.

Westfield held a 23-3 shot advantage for the game as well as an 11-4 edge in penalty corner attempts.

Owls' junior goalkeeper Katie Vamosi (Easton, Mass.) made three saves to record her first win and shutout of the season.

Bridgewater State senior netminder Jillian Delaney (Foxborough, Mass.) turned aside ten shots in 45 minutes of action. Freshman Deirdre Duarte (Fall River, Mass.) played the final 15 minute and did not face a shot on goal.

The Little East slate continues for both teams next Tuesday. The Bears travel to Fitchburg State University for a four o'clock game with the Falcons, while the Owls host Worcester State University at seven.
