Field Hockey Cruises Past UMass Dartmouth in LEC Quarters

WORCESTER, Mass. - The top-seeded Worcester State University field hockey team made quick work of eighth-seeded UMass Dartmouth, defeating the Corsairs 7-0 in the Quarterfinal of the Little East Conference Tournament Tuesday evening at Coughlin Field.

With the win, the Lancers set a program record with their 16th win of the season, improving to 16-4. They advance to face #4 Southern Maine in the LEC Semifinals on Thursday, as the Huskies defeated #5 Castleton 2-0 in other quarterfinal action Tuesday. UMass Dartmouth's season comes to a close with a record of 7-12.

Worcester State came out of the gates flying, with four quick first quarter goals. Senior Rachel Hopkins (Chelmsford, Mass.) scored twice, with senior Olivia Antonelli (Westford, Mass.) and junior Coley Hayes (Norwood, Mass.) chipping in first quarter goals, all in the span of just 6:23.

Senior Sophia Monopoli (Worcester, Mass.) scored early in the second quarter for Worcester State, and Hopkins completed the first half hat trick and the hosts took a 6-0 lead into halftime.

Neither team found the net in the third quarter, but junior Sarah Duff (Warren, Mass.) scored an insurance marker midway through the fourth quarter, giving the game its final score of 7-0.

Sophomore goalkeeper Jess Hopkins (Chelmsford, Mass.) did not have to make a save to get her 16th win of the season. Sophomore Kacy Florence (Methuen, Mass.) made one save in relief in the fourth quarter.

Rachel Hopkins finished the contest with three goals and two assists for the Lancers. She took 11 shots for Worcester State, with nine landing on target. The Lancers heavily outshot the Corsairs, finishing with a margin of 26-2.
