Women's Lacrosse Slipped Up by St. Lawrence

WORCESTER, Mass. - The Worcester State University women's lacrosse team was defeated 13-11 by St. Lawrence University Saturday afternoon in the home opener at John F. Coughlin Memorial Field.

With the loss, Worcester State drops to 2-2 overall on the season, while St. Lawrence moves to 1-1.

Worcester State scored the first two goals of the game on tallies from sophomore Maddy Brennan (Pomfret, Conn.) and junior Abby Magnuson (Ellington, Conn.), but a St. Lawrence timeout after Magnuson's score started the visitors on the comeback trail. The Saints scored five of the final six goals of the half to take a 5-3 lead into the break. Rachel Burke scored a first half hat trick to lead all scorers.

Lancer senior Rachel Hopkins (Chelmsford, Mass.) scored a pair of goals in the first five minutes of the second half to tie the score at 5-5. After the teams traded goals over the next four and a half minutes, Hopkins gave the Lancers their first lead since 2-0 with her third of the afternoon, but again the Saints would have an answer.

A tally from Jaime Allan with 9:13 showing on the clock gave the Saints the biggest lead of the day at 12-9. Brennan and Magnuson scored 1:19 apart in the closing minutes to cut the deficit to one, but a final second tally from Hannah Drechsel sealed the 13-11 win for St. Lawrence.

Brennan scored four goals and two assists for the Lancers in the defeat, with Hopkins finishing with three goals. Magnuson netted a pair, while Hannah Sledzieski (Northampton, Mass.) and Shea Jarvis (Auburn, Mass.) each found the back of the net once.

Burke recorded four goals and an assist to lead the victorious Saints, with Claudia Barbera chipping in with a hat trick. Allan scored twice, with Drechsel, Nicole Stanton, Isabel Silvia, and Liddy DeConto scoring once.

In net, the win went to St. Lawrence's Raelynn Bovenzi, who turned aside nine shots. Worcester State freshman Savanna Rosado (Milford, Mass.) took the loss, also making nine saves.

Worcester State will be back on the field for a 4 p.m. start on Wednesday afternoon when they welcome Johnson & Wales to Coughlin Field. St. Lawrence will be off for a week before opening Liberty League play against RPI on March 14.
