Trio of Golden Bears Record Two Points in 4-0 Win over Westfield State

Westfield, Mass. (September 7, 2022) - The Western New England Golden Bears went on the road to Westfield State for a middle-of-the-week matchup. WNE looked to continue their recent success and get their third win in a row.

Records:

  • Western New England: 3-1-0
  • Westfield State: 0-2-1

How it Happened:

The Golden Bears started off hot with a quick goal in the third minute of play from Carlson Rose, who netted his second of the season for the team. The goal would energize the G-Bears, who would then push toward the goal and put two shots towards the net, with one of them forcing Westfield State's GK, Drew Adams, to make his first save of the day. WNE would take four more shots before Westfield State would get their first one off. That shot was on net and made WNE GK Jacob Wadas worry a little before making the save. As the first half continued to move on, the Golden Bears would continue their pressure on the Owls. WNE would shoot another three times, but none of the shots would worry Adams too much. In the 35th minute, Wadas would make another save to deny the Owls a tying goal. The first half would end with two more shots from WNE, with the last one challenging Adams, but he was equal to the task with a save.

WNE would tack up 13 shots during the first half to Westfield State's 2. Three of WNE's shots would be on net, with Drew Adams making two saves against the G-Bears. Both of Westfield State's shots were on goal, with Jacob Wadas making both saves against them. Western New England would have three corner kick opportunities and limit the Owls to no corner kicks in the first half. WNE would be the more aggressive team in the first half with their six fouls to WSU's two. The Golden Bears would go into the half with a 1-0 lead looking to capitalize more on their shots in the second half.

After an early shot on goal by Westfield State that would see Wadas make his third save of the game, the Golden Bears would extend. Matt Spruill scored in the 49th minute after Malik Serriser found Roger Leland, who sent the ball over to Spruill to nail it into the back of the net past, Adams. That would put WNE's lead at 2-0. The two teams would swap shots and possession for the next eight minutes before WNE struck again in the 58th minute. Serriser would be the goal scorer this time, with Sean O'Neill sending a pass in front of him that Serriser sent flying past Adams' gloves for a 3-0 lead. WNE would not take their foot off the gas, though. Serriser would go for goal a minute later; however, it would go wide of the net. Westfield would push back, hoping to get a goal back, but Wadas would make sure WNE's clean sheet was still clean with a nice save on Matthew Allen from WSU. Just four minutes later, in the 64th minute, Leland would get his first goal of the year on an assist from Carlson Rose. That would extend the lead to 4-0 and seal the scoring for the game.

WNE would challenge Adams three more times as they sent shots toward him, but he was able to keep the G-Bears at four goals. Westfield State would challenge Wadas two more times, hoping for a spark, but Wadas would keep the Owls out of the net to get the shutout. WNE's pressure would show in the stat sheet as they would outshoot Westfield State 27 to 11 in total and had three more corner kicks than the Owls. Wadas and Adams each saved six shots, and WNE would have 11 fouls to WSU's seven. The 4-0 win would give the Golden Bears their third win in a row.
