Softball blanks Framingham for first win, falls short against Clarkson

CLERMONT, Fla.—Freshman Oriana Castello (Pearl River/Nanuet) posted a four-hit shutout as Buffalo State defeated Framingham State 2-0 in the second game to earn a two-game split on Day 2 of its trip to Clermont, Fla. The Bengals opened the day by falling short in a 4-2 loss to Clarkson.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Sydney McIntosh (Buffalo/Kenmore West) finished 1 of 3 from the plate with a lead-off homerun in the top of the second inning.
  • Chelsea Davis (Lancaster/Lancaster) went 2 for 3 from the dish with a double, while Julia Blujus (Amherst/Sacred Heart) tallied a run scored.
  • Castello, Laura Bagley (Clarence/Clarence) and Taylor Benton (Niagara Falls/Niagara Wheatfield) each also recorded a hit for the Bengals.
  • Marissa Hayes (N. Tonawanda/Niagara Wheatfield) picked up the loss on the mound for the Bengals, giving up three earned runs on seven hits in six innings of work.
  • After Buffalo State opened up the scoring in the top of the first inning as Blujus scored on a throwing error by the Golden Knights' second baseman, the Bengals doubled their lead with its first homerun of the early season.
  • Clarkson closed the gap as it plated one in the bottom of the second, two in the bottom of the fourth and one insurance marker in the bottom of the sixth.
 
FOR THE FOES
  • Raeanna Dunn led Clarkson from the plate, going 2 for 4 with three RBIs, while Rylee LeBourveau went 2 for 3 with two runs scored.
  • Sam Mennig earned the win for the Golden Knights, giving up two runs on six hits in seven innings of action.

  • Castello pitched a complete-game shutout with four strikeouts to go along with a 1 for 3 hitting performance from the plate with one RBI.
  • Blujus went 2 for 3 from the dish and scored both Buffalo State runs.
  • Davis and McIntosh each finished 1 for 3 with Davis adding an RBI, while Hannah Dunlap (Batavia/Oakfield-Alabama) also recorded a hit.
  • Buffalo State opened the scoring with a run in the first inning, for the second-consecutive game, as Castello hit an RBI single up the middle to score Blujus.
  • The Bengals doubled their lead as Davis singled to left center to score Blujus from second base.
  • Framingham State threatened in the bottom of the fifth with a ball hit to deep left center field, but a diving catch by Justine Silva (Baldwin Park, CA/Arroyo) kept the lead intact.
  • The Rams found themselves with bases loaded with two outs in the top of the seventh, but could not complete the rally as game ended with a foul out to Alyssa Nichy (Depew/Depew).
