The Fitchburg State Men's Basketball team suffered a 95-68 setback to the  Lancers of Worcester State this afternoon in Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) action from the Parkinson Gymnasium.

How It Happened

Worcester State raced out to a 6-0 lead with back-to-back treys from senior Cal Howes (Maynard, Mass.), as the Falcons answered with a bucket from sophomore Dominik Williams (Newark, NJ) for a 6-2 score. Nine points from junior Chris Cardoso (Jamaica Plain, Mass.) pushed the Lancers to a 14-2 lead. With 8:39 to play the Green and Gold got scores from senior Charles Doss (Fitchburg, Mass.) and sophomore Devon Johnson (Washington, DC) to close the gap (29-16). Junior Anthony Diaz (Harrisburg, Penn.) completed a three-point play to cut the deficit (39-21) but the Lancers close out the frame with an 11-6 run for a 50-27 at intermission. 

Following the intermission, the Falcons hit consecutive baskets from Diaz and freshman Xavier Betancourt (Tampa, Fla.) to cut into the lead (50-31), however the Lancers upped it margin (72-50) with a three-pointer from Cardoso and a pair from the charity strip by freshman Sam Dion (Barre, Mass.). The Lancers secured their eighth win (95-68) of the season with five straight hoops from beyond-the-arc.

Inside the Numbers

  • Falcons were led by Betancourt with a team-best 18 points, while Williams and Diaz each chipped in with 11.
  • For the Lancers, senior Tyler Dion (Barre, Mass.) led all scorers with 24 points and Erik Bjorn (Holden, Mass.) had the games only double-double with 15 points and 11 boards 
  • Fitchburg State shot 26-of-60 (43.3%) from the field and (5-for-13) 38.5% from three point range
  • Worcester State finished 34-for-62 (54.8%) overall and (15-for-32) 46.9% for beyond the arc
  • Worcester State held a slim 35-32 margin on the glass

Fitchburg State will return to the hardwood on Wednesday night when they travel to Framingham State. Worcester State will be back in action the same evening, hosting Bridgewater State.
