Men's Ice Hockey Draws Against Assumption College 5-5

WORCESTER, Mass.- The Worcester State men's ice hockey team played an overtime 5-5 draw Saturday night against cross-city rival Assumption College at Worcester Ice Center.

The tie moves the Lancers to 4-2-1. The Greyhounds move to 2-3-1 with the draw.

The Lancers took an early lead in the first period. Junior Tim Drevitch (Oxford, N.J.) took the puck all the way down the ice making it through a defenseman and sending the puck into the back of the net unassisted at the 11:27 mark for his third goal this season. Less than thirty seconds later a collective team effort put the Lancers up by two. Deiter Stange (Niles, Ill.) and Brian Smith (Dracut, Mass.) assisted Gunther Stange (Niles, Ill.) in his first goal of the season.

Assumption came out of the locker room hoping to cut their deficit and 5:37 into the second period Dante Maribito (Grogetown, Mass.) put one past Blake Bjella (Mesa, Ariz.) on a pass from Robert Roche (Holden, Mass.). The Lancers had a quick turnaround to  counteract the the Greyhounds' goal when Mark Revniaga (Nahariya, Israel) nabbed his first goal of the season less than twenty seconds later off an assist from Drevitch and a secondary from Sean Gavin (Galena, Ohio).

Worcester State extended their lead on a power play goal where Matthew Manning (Novi, Mich) sent one between the pipes with assists from Revniaga and Petr Staif (Zruc-Senec, Czech Republic). The Greyhounds cut the Lancer lead in half, 4-2, before heading into the locker room for intermission when Elliott McGuire (Reading, Mass.) grabbed his first goal of the season off assists from Christopher Stalmok (Paxton, Mass.) and John McDonagh (Latrobe, Pa.). 

The Greyhounds skated a strong third period where they scored three goals to take their first lead of the night. William Smith (Hyde Park, Mass.) was the first to find the back of the net for Assumption. Brendan Philippon (Salem, N.H.) grabbed the tying power play goal. McDonagh put the Greyhounds ahead for the first time all night, 5-4, on his own power play goal that came at the sixteen minute mark.

The Lancers refused to be defeated on home ice when Manning grabbed his second goal of the night tying the Greyhounds off a pass from Will Ahearn (Charlestown, Mass.). Overtime saw three shots from both teams neither able to convert into the winning shot.

Drew Benedict (Cooper City, Fla.) and David Altman (Bristol, R.I.) split time between the pipes for the Greyhounds grabbing 16 and 12 saves respectively. Bjella stopped thirty goals in his 65 minutes.

 Next up the Lancers host Anna Maria on Tuesday night. Faceoff is scheduled for 3:40 p.m. at Worcester Ice Center.
