Owls Cruise to Share of Conference Title

WESTFIELD, Mass. – The Westfield State women's volleyball team defeated Mass. Maritime in straight sets (25-15, 25-15, 29-27) on Saturday, Oct. 29 in the final regular season match of the season.

The Owls finish with a 6-1 record in the MASCAC, 11-11 overall, and they clinch a share of the regular season MASCAC title with Framingham State.

The Buccaneers' season comes to a close with a 3-16 record, 0-7 in the conference.

Prior to the match Westfield recognized their two seniors, Ashley Crowley (Billerica, Mass./ Billerica) and Shawna Crowley (Billerica, Mass./ Billerica) for their dedication and leadership within the volleyball program.

The two seniors had strong contributions for the Owls, Shawna Crowley posted a game- high 12 kills including the final two of the match to break a 27-27 tie in the third set. Ashley Crowley chipped in nine digs and five kills.

Julia Dangel-Garcia (Ashland, Mass./ Ashland) and Allie Hill (St. Clair Shores, Mich./ Lakeview) led the Owls defensively with 12 digs each. Dangel-Garcia also connected on 17 assists.

The Mass. Maritime's offense was led by Shayla Narodowg's (Wellington, Colo./ Poudre) 11 kills and a match-high 22 assists from Keira Whalen (Philadelphia, Penn./ St. Basil Academy/ Villa Joseph Marie).

Three Bucs grabbed double-digit digs, Isabell Miazga (Rocky Hill, Conn./ Rocky Hill) had a game-high 19, Marlo Stark (Groton, Conn./ Marine Science Magnet School of SE Conn.) picked up 12 and Narodowg added 10.

Westfield State carried a 14-7 advantage in service aces.

Westfield State will enter the conference tournament as the second seed due to tie-breakers, receive a first round bye, and host the winner of the third and sixth seed in the Woodward Center on Thursday, Nov. 3 at 7:00 p.m.
