Softball Falters Against MCLA

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. - The Worcester State University softball team was dealt a pair of defeats by MCLA Friday afternoon in Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference action at the Zavattaro Athletic Complex. Worcester State fell 8-0 in five innings in game one, and 7-1 in game two.

With the sweep, Worcester State falls to 6-30 on the season.

Game 1 - MCLA 8, Worcester State 0

After both offenses were quiet in the early innings, MCLA scored in the third, fourth, and fifth innings to win a shortened opener.

Worcester State got its only offense of game one on a second inning single from Katie Polselli (Charlton, Mass.) and a fourth inning single from Ashley Lynch (Shrewsbury, Mass.), but the Lancers couldn't bring either across the plate to score.

MCLA scored first in the bottom of the third inning, putting up a four-spot to take a 4-0 lead. The Trailblazers would add another on a sacrifice fly in the fouth, and ended the game on a bases clearing single in the bottom of the fifth.

Senior Rachel Frisch (Worcester, Mass.) took the loss in game one.

Game 2 - MCLA 7, Worcester State 1

A first inning sacrifice fly from Polselli put Worcester State on the board first in the second game of the afternoon, but the Lancer offense would cool down after that.

The Trailblazers quickly responded to Worcester's early lead by scoring six in the bottom of the first, taking a 6-1 lead.

Junior Carly Zielinski (Monson, Mass.) was stellar in relief for Worcester State, but the damage was already done. Zielinski allowed just one run, an unearned run in the bottom of the fifth inning, on three hits in 5.2 innings, but the Lancers never recovered from the early hole.

Lynch recorded two of Worcester State's three hits in the loss, while junior Samantha Stake (Worcester, Mass.) added a base hit of her own.

The Lancers will be off for over a week before playing in their final regular season doubleheader on April 27 at home against Mass. Maritime. The Lancers will honor their five seniors before the game in their final home game at Raymond Diamond.
