Football Downed by Endicott in Season Opener

Beverly, Mass. - The Framingham State University football team opened the 2019 season this evening with a 55-27 loss to Endicott College in non-conference action at Hempstead Stadium.

THE BASICS:

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Endicott grabbed a 21-0 lead in the first quarter after a pair of touchdown passes from Joe Kalosky and a pair of interceptions including a pick six by Michael Lefebre.
  • The Rams got on the board on their third drive as senior Adam Wojenski (Stratford, Conn.) connected with sophomore Austin Nunn (Bellingham, Mass.) for a 74-yard touchdown strike.
  • The Rams cut the game to 21-13 in the closing minute of the first quarter with an 11 play, 89 yard scoring drive.  The drive was aided by a 23-yard rush by senior Jacob Maher (Mansfield, Mass.) on a fourth and 15 and pass interference call that gave the Rams the ball on the five yard line.  Freshman Devaun Ford (Mashpee, Mass.) found the end zone from five yards out for his first collegiate score.
  • Endicott pushed the lead to 28-13 after Kalosky's third touchdown pass of the game, but a 36-yard touchdown run from Ford cut the deficit to 28-20 at the half.
  • The Rams scored on the opening drive of the second half on a five yard run from senior Rufus Rushins (Lynn, Mass.), but the Gulls pulled away scoring the final 27 points of the game.

  

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • The Rams and the Gulls have met in the season opener since 2008 with the Gulls last defeating the Rams in 2012 before tonight.  The Rams won the previous six meetings before this season.
  • The Gulls forced five turnovers by the Rams in the game and were able to convert four of those takeaways into points including a pair of pick sixes.
  • Kalosky finished the game going 21 of 28 for the Gulls for 374 yards with five touchdowns, while Justin McEwen had five catches for 157 yards and a pair of scores.
  • Wojenski completed 19 of 40 for the Rams for 246 yards with a touchdown and four picks.  Ford finished the game with nine rushes for 69 yards and pair of scores while also catching four passes for 40 yards.
  • Nunn made three catches in the game for 102 yards and a score, while Maher grabbed eight balls for 77 yards.
  • The Rams defense was paced by a game-high 12 tackles from junior Joshua Onujiogu (Wareham, Mass.), while classmate Anthony Behonick (Rutland, Mass.) added 10 tackles including seven solo stops and three for a loss.

The Rams are back in action next Saturday when the travel to Brockport for a non-conference matchup beginning at noon.
