Vikings Claim 3-0 Victory Over Mass Maritime

SALEM, Mass. - Sarah Janco (Methuen, Mass.) finished with game-high of 16 kills along with three digs to spark the Salem State Vikings to a 3-0 sweep over the Mass Maritime Buccaneers on Tuesday night at Twohig Gymnasium. The Vikings won (25-21, 25-9, 25-11) and are now 1-14 on the season and 1-3 in the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC). The Buccaneers drop to 2-15 on the year and 0-4 in the MASCAC.

In the first set, Mass Maritime trailed 7-5. However, the Buccaneers went on to score five consecutive points leading 10-7 to force a Salem State timeout. Michelle Sheehan (Attleboro, Mass.) had a couple of key kills during that stretch. Later in the set, the Vikings tied it at 18 as Darcy McDowell (Goshen, N.Y.) tallied the kill. Towards the end of the first set with both sides trading points, Janco provided back-to-back kills and a set-winning ace by Michelle Le (Dorchester, Mass.) helped Salem State pulled away to win 25-21.

In the second set, Mass Maritime got off to a sloppy start committing four errors and the Vikings took advantage in building a 6-1 advantage. Salem State's dominance continued throughout the second set as McDowell and Janco each had four kills to win the second set 25-9. Both players did a great job spiking the ball in tough spots for the Buccaneers.

The Vikings got off to a hot start in the third set and went ahead 9-0 as Janco helped with three kills during that run. Salem State finished out the set strong to win 25-11.

Salem State's Le had 12 digs and four service aces for the game. McDowell finished with ten digs and seven kills.

For Mass Maritime, Bianca Andronic contributed 11 assists and seven digs and Christina Ruggeri (Bourne, Mass.) added 12 digs.
